Hi! Had my boat broken into a couple of days ago.Seems there's has been a rash of break-ins in my neighborhood. Woke up one morning to find a rip in my fabric garage tent that i use to store my broke in. Nothing was taken so i just patched it up. Two days later i had the locks on my two sheds ripped off and my boat broken into. Lucky i left my boats' door unlocked , they stole my nice Richie compass and the two speakers . I can't seem to posted any pictures but you can see what was taken in my photo album.
 
Thieves are low life. That sucks! You may consider setting up alarms and video monitoring. We have all three. Boat alarm, Lights on motion sensor, and video cameras monitoring all around the house--and we are in a low crime area....But neighborhoods a mile away have problems, when we don't. We also have signs as you come into the area: Video Surveillance 24/7, Neighborhood Watch, call (Sheriff's office dispatch phone #). Thru the years, we have caught several thieves and the "word gets out"...
 
I have installed two new security motion lights and four new dead bolts on the sheds. I also have installed a intercom system in one of the sheds , I have one monitor beside my bed and will hear them if they attempt to break in again. Would like to install some kind of alarm that makes lots of noise in my boat but am unable to find any where I live. The police and neighborhood knows who's doing these break-ins , ( their names are posted on the local news )but the police seem to be doing nothing. The police arrest them , let them out the same day and they go back to doing their break-ins. These people should be denied bail and kept in jail.
 
At the U Washington and other places, I had literally millions of dollars worth of items, sometimes small and expensive, including environmental monitors, GPSs, computers, tools, electronics, etc., in the field installations, labs, and vehicles over the decades. During the 1980's it was very common to have lab balances stolen to weigh drugs. Labeling them stopped this, even when bolting them down didn't. Later, it was computers, including sequential breakins to steal replacement items. The only things taken were not labeled.

Use an engraver to label things, inside and out. Bob's other suggestions are also likely to turn some thiefs around before they break in.

Seriously, Mark verything (engrave) with your drivers license number twice. Once where it is very visable, and once where it is out of sight. Get a dog, or neighbors that have big, loud dogs. Motion lights are good too.

A very simple alarm is made by using a normally closed roller micro switch. Wedge a small piece of plastic, like a small piece of spreader used for Bondo or epoxy to hold it open. Secure a piece of 40 to 50 lb monofilament to a hole in the plastic. Secure the other side to some place where anyone breaking into the boat, or even into the shed/boat house etc. will contact the monofilament and trip the alarm.

From the micro switch you wire one (or two in series for 12 V) 6 volt dry cell, to a relay (VW Horn relay works well) if the amperage exceeds the limits of microswitch and this can turn on strobe light, flood light, siren etc.

I had a model of this, but I sold it a few years back. Amazon has solid state sirens from $11 on up. 6V dry cell battery about $10, Grainger has a 15 amp roller switch @ $11. So for $40 you can make the alarm system. All sorts of other ways to do it.

You can rig it up if you have canvas over the cockpit--that if it is disturbed it will trigger the alarm..

There are all sorts of other motion sensitive alarms on the internet for boats, bicycles etc..
 
Remi, sorry to hear. It hurts when you loose stuff that means more to you than somebody stealing it to sell for a few bucks. I have the same compass - mounted it in my cupholder - an exact fit.

Things are bad here too as many out of work and struggling. Unfortunately many of the victims are struggling as well.

It's messing with my boat that pisses off most , it's not only my boat but my camper as well. That's a good idea about making your own alarm siren , I will have to do that and place the alarm inside my boat. I will post some pictures after i get it installed. Thanks.
 
I'm curious about your camper. I have an AllTerain 8 ft popup shell that I built out. Towing this 800 lb camper and the C-Dory with a 1/2 ton Dodge truck works fine as long as I don't overload it. What do you have?
