Calling on C-Dory Historians

I got the 14' home after getting a little service work done at EQ Marine. When I got the registration, to my surprise it was registered as a 1992 not a 2002 as I had thought. Because it was in such good shape and it had an '02 Honda on it, I had made an incorrect assumption. I don't know where it has been for 19 years, but it must have been stored inside for most of the time.

Here's my question. I didn't know that this boat was being made in the 90's. There are so few of them that I've only seen one before and it was new in 2005. Does anybody know the history on the 14? How many were made and when they started producing them?

That would be a good starting point wouldn't it. It is DOR14006B292. If I'm reading it correctly, it would be the 6th one built. Is that right?

I am pretty sure this is the boat that was at EQ when we bought Salty two weeks ago.....I have a picture of it posted in Salty's album....And thanks for letting me win the bet with Craig that I thought it was a 14.. He said they didn't make 14's just 16's..
As new C Dory owners could one of you nice guys decipher our Hull Serial number too....DOR22929J001 I get the first 5 but got lost after that. Salty is a 2001
Thank You

Julie
Now, that I am right, I do see there are a few 14's listed on CBrats site!

October is J; built in Oct 2000, a 2001 model year number.
Hull numbers can be "messed with"--so not sure it is 929--but that is most likely. Some builders will start at 100, some times numbers are skipped etc. Usually the first two of these are the model such as "22". For the C Dory 22.

The first 3 letters are the ID of the manufacture
The next 5 numbers are the "hull serial numbers"
The next two are letter ID starting with A for Jan, and L for December, with the digit being the year of lay up or certification
The last two are model year.

For the 14, it would be a layup in Feb "2"--but not necessarilly the second day--it would be the year it was laid up.

You will find that most C Dories follow this convention--but it was changed in 1984. From 1972, when HIN became manditory, to 1984 the last 4 digits/letters indicated the model year/certification--but "A" was for August, and went thru "L" in July...

The model year changed from year to year-Just like autos. Some years it may have been changed in May, others September. Since the boats were not changed much it makes little difference.

So, if the 14 is #6 and it was built in 1992, does anyone know when the first one was built? I have the same curiosity about the last one built and the total number built. I know that I saw a new one at the Seattle boat show around 2006.

Julie, yes it was the boat that you saw at EQ. It does look a lot like a 16, just smaller.

Craig and Julie,

Sorry I missed you while you were in Anacortes. ( I assume you picked up the boat from Tony). He had it in the Anacortes Yacht Charter fleet and I was the back-up check out captain. Nice boat. Hope to see you back on the waters in the San Juans sometime.

Anna Leigh,
Sorry we missed you too. Craig and I really want to do the Friday Harbour gathering but it will probably have to wait until next year.....we are so new at this and that is just about the time we plan to pick Salty up. It sits at EQ right now.We have a lot of learnin g to do before we venture too far. We did buy Salty from Tony and we have also taken the 3 day boating class from AYC with Larry....April 2010. Craig came out last fall to "get his feet wet" and chartered Charlie TOO AYC. We called on Salty at exactly the right time. We could not be more excited and know we got a really nice boat. Thanks for all the info, guys and we do hope to meet you all in the future.....
Julie...and Craig too

Hey Lyle- If you put the weight back on, give me a call. Seriously, I do hope you have a lot of fun on the Cowbell. Hope you post some pictures.

We barely fit in the 16...I really want to see Lyle and Shelly in the 14! Do you have a davit to hoist it up onto that yacht of yours?

The capacity plate says 4 people or 480 lbs. In our family, there is no combination of 4 that would total 480 lbs.

No Pat, there isn't room anywhere for it to fit on the bigger boat. We'll have one more learning experience when we start to tow it. By the way, the Westcoast is still a "boat" not a "yacht". I'd have to have a lot more class to own a "yacht".
