I’m back to considering a 22 SD for our family of 3. I’ve been looking to buy a boat in the 20 to 25 foot range for some time now and have looked at them all. My son is now 7 and we can pack him about anywhere, but he sometimes likes to take a friend. Most of our outings will be for 2 or 3 days with occasional longer trips with just the 3 of use. I know the 25 SD would be a better choice but just can't cough up the 80K it takes to get into a used one nor do I won’t to feed twice the hp.
We live in Anchorage and will most likely be putting in at Wittier or Seward. We plan on fishing some but exploring will be are primary source of entertainment.
Been camping in a small 21ft 5th wheel trailer for the past 8 year so realize we’ll be downsizing a lot, and thats ok.
So what are your thoughts on this, can a family of 3 be content living on a 22ft C-Dory for 2 or 3 days at a time with an occasional guest?

Its definitely doable, but it depends solely on you and family. Some would be driven nuts others quite cozy and content.

We would have loved it in our younger days even with 3 little boys. We did one heck of a lot of traveling with much less room and comfort than a c-dory 22 has to offer.

I grew up cruising in a boat with considerably less room than a C Dory22 (including no standing head room and sleeping in the cockpit for youngest member of the family). Some times I took my two kids and wife to Catalina in an 18 footer with bench seats and fold down seats/floor sleeping. Definately can be done. The difference between the RV and the boat, is getting off onto land, especially in AK.

Very do-able.

As Bill and El have testified, the Camper Back option gives you alot more elbow room for kids, etc.. Although I 've not owned a CD 22, my kids always liked to sleep in the cockpit, aisle or somewhere other than the normal bunks. If close to land, they used small tents ashore. Some times used a small, self erecting tent in the cockpit for them also.

Wow, encouraging feedback. I’ll defiantly be looking for a used 22 CD in the next 8 months. I missed a couple here in Anchorage over the last year but sure one will show up sooner or later.
For now my old trailer and 14ft Portaboat will have to do.

Thanks for the feedback and I’ll stay posted,

Jay
