Can you take a vessel name with you?

So if I sell my 16 and get a 19, can I decommission the name from the old boat and put it on the new boat? Or will that anger Davey Jones and cause me to sink?

:)

Curious about the tradition here.

Absolutely you can transfer the name from your "old vessel" to the "new vessel".

In case you are unaware of it, if you click on the "Forums" in the header above, then click on "Documents", then go to page 2 and locate the "Denaming Ceremony" and "Christening Ceremony" you will find some ideas that can be adapted to most certainly keep you safe from Davy Jones Locker.

If all else fails, use a heat gun and carefully remove the name from your previous vessel and christen the name on the new vessel.

(I'm cruising in my 2nd vessel named Sea Shift.....the first was a 16' cruiser, I just consumed a lot of ultra fine beer after I heat gunned the name off the 16', so that there was some semblance of a ceremony and then had Rev. Jim christen the new 22' for me.)

I always thought a name should be unique to a particular vessel. I think it provides the personality and attitude to the vessel shaped by your experiences on her. I think she keeps her own personality regardless of who owns it :)

I just noticed your boat's name....

Are you saying you have a Napoleanic personality, Matt? Or does your boat have that attitude?

Ha ha - it's the boats personality. I named my previous boat "Divide and Conquer" so Napoleon was an offshoot of that theme.

not exactly sure about this regarding a uscg documented vessel. my recollection is that the name stays with the vessel unless the coast guard gives permission to change, and then a new name must be assigned to the original vessel.
you guys should see some of the names house-boaters have given their boats. it's more like a sentence than a name. lord help them in an emergency.
well, i'm off to the gym, transforming and old body into, 21 year old johnny hardbody! at least that's what i'm telling my wife!

That would be a bummer if someone located the ideal vessel to purchase, but the boat happened to carry the name of the prospective purchaser's ex-wife. His current wife would probably nix the purchase......

There is no problem legally changing a documented vessel's name. The Doc number stays with the boat--but not necessarilly the name. You can even change the documented vessel's name without change of ownership--for example if you change wives...but that will cost you--both from the CG (about $100) and the "Ex"--there the sky is the limit!

We have sold some boats (documented) with the caviat that we keep the name. The Tom Cat is our 4th boat named "Thataway"--however, I had sold one boat with the name "Thataway"--and did not use that name, until he had sold the boat--and the name was taken off.
