Catch Me If You Can: The Global Pursuit of a Fugitive Ship

Below is a link for an interesting article in Hakai Magazine about the pursuit and capture of an illegal fishing vessel. The article indicates that up to 20% of the fish caught annually are illegilly caught and sold, endangering the worlds fish populations.

Interesting, Yes, and informative. I have been a "fan" of Sea Shepherd for years. Started from watching their work in the southern oceans, interdiction activities with the Japanese whaling industry and then as I saw them in person up on the BC coast dealing with the open water net pen fish farms. Quit a life they live.

Interesting about the cat and mouse chase. The fugitive vessel routinely turned off its AIS and used a false MMSI. But it would also be monitoring the AIS of other vessels. Any pursuit vessel would also have likely turned off it's AIS in order to follow or approach unannounced. It could become a contest of whose radar is better. Which makes me wonder if a drone can send out a directional radar signal from 1,000 feet. Sort of like using a periscope.

Reminds me of a small town night-time burglary where the bad guys were followed home. How did the sheriff's deputy follow them and not be seen? He drove 12 miles on rural roads with his headlights off just following the tail lights of the bad guys. It helped that he was familiar with the roads, but yikes.
