Changing Lettering on Used Hull

We have changed the registration numbers on a used hull and find that the old lettering is still visible in the fiberglass. The glass appears whiter where the old numbers used to be. We have already applied the new numbers but are not real happy with the finished look. Is there a way to remove the shadow of the old numbers from the glass? Hoping to work this our before tackling the larger boat name graphics. Thanks.

The easier way is to remove the old numbers, and then compound and buff the whole area and then put on the new numbers but hind sights is always 20/20.

The problem is that the gel coat around the letters is faded, and the gel coat under the letters is not. Accordingly, it is virtually impossible to eliminate the shadowing.

If you are registering your boat in the same state that you bought it, you may be able to get the old registeration number from your DMV. (Really)

In my state once a boat has a registration number that number stays with the boat when ownership transfers. So you don't have this issue with the numbers. Still occurs with names and other markings though.
 
The compound, polish and wax is certainly the way to go. However, the ghost will fade with time. It is always at its worse when you first remove. the old letters/numbers.
