:amgry We discovered a small ($12.55) charge on one of our credit cards that just didn't ring a bell. Upon investigation it was a "company" called NET and we ended up at a toll free number 866-652-3059 which, if one follows a calling tree, ends up with "press 1 for instant credit card refund" and a request for our credit card number.
Suspicious, we contacted our credit card company and they said it was an "advertising company." We promptly disputed the charge and have heard nothing since. The charge was removed.
As a credit card merchant, I do know that if a customer disputes our charge and it is valid, we are charged the amount plus a $35 penalty but it takes a major effort to get a credit card company to actively pursue the credit card abusers. I think their fraud guys are overloaded, actually.
The point? It's very easy to overlook a small unassuming charge on an active credit card but if some guy just walked up and grabbed ten bucks from your hand and walked away, we'd look at it a little differently. Check your bills. Dispute suspicious charges. It cuts into their profits and leaves more room on your credit card for necessities. Like beer....
NET is apparently still in business. That number still works.
