De-naming of the susan e

Susan E

so ... the last Bite we had on a buyer for the little Susan E .. was a bust. the guy didn't even get out of his car to look at it. drove by and drove on. He talked to tom and the guys said was not interested in a boat so "used". Since the boat is in fantastic shape as proven by our marine apriassal.....it must be the dramatic artwork we have put on it in vinyl. and thus to my breaking heart we are taking off all my artwork in the hot sun. The Susan E will be back to factory looks.

so two questions...

one is acetone okay to take off the glue from the vinyl. goof off didn;t touch it. acetone works like a champ with no apearance of damage to the gell coat but i thought i would ask incase tomorrow morning from a different angle i realize some grand mistake.

and second..... what is the de-naming ceremony say... tom and i are thinking when we take the name off there should be a monent of silence for all wonderful places it has taken us, and the wonderful people we have met in it, and all the other moment of fun and hanky panky accumulated.
does any one remenber the poem?

thanks
susan

Hi Susan,
To locate the Denaming Ceremony, click on "Forums" (top of this page), scroll down and click on "Documents", on page 2 of "Documents" you will find the " Boat Denaming Ceremony".

Perhaps a few of us could stand in the middle of your street and with great respect and dignity perform a righteous denaming ceremony and if anyone attempts to drive by with out stopping and demonstrating the proper respect to your lovely 22', we could all stone them with river rock. (Obviously it would be up to you if want to share your "hanky panky" tales with the assembled group).

Hope this is a help.

Susan,

I had trouble getting the name off the "Nancy H" when I sold her so I purchased a vinyl remover disc from the auto paint store on Rucker near 40th st in Everett. It looks like a large round pink eraser on a mandrel. It is sold to remove the vinyl trim from cars.

To use, chuck it in a drill motor and apply the spinning edge to the vinyl. The friction heats up the vinyl and its glue and removes it. Any remaining residue can be removed with acetone. Use sparingly on a rag, turning the rag frequently to a clean side.

I 'denamed' the Nancy H. It seemed like the only proper thing to do for a boat faithful to us for 16 years. During the denaming ceremony, reassure the boat that she will have a great new owner, who will take her many wonderful places.

Maybe the De-renaming ceremony ought to be done "in spirit" at the Sequim CBGT...... of course when I say "in spirit" I am implying you would be attending the Sequim Gathering in your new boat; however, the vibes of you and Tom and multitudes of other Brats (actually, currently too few signed up for the Sequim Gathering to consider it a multitude) would be combined to heighten the experience!

OK, perhaps the spirit thing is not your bag but we would still love to see you guys in Sequim.

Any chance you guys will be joining us Susan? It was good seeing you at Montague and a nice parting shot going by you and Tom on the point waving as we departed.

Take care,
Dan & Tanya

With a hairdryer the vinyl will come off without too much difficulty. It's tedious and time consuming - but doable. Experiment a little and you will likely have much of the adhesive come off (on the vinyl) as well.

As for any adhesive that remains on the gelcoat, acetone will take it off just fine. It doesn't do any good for rubber or painted surfaces, but the gelcoat should be ok.

After it's all cleaned-up do a little buffing and it'll look like it just came out of the factory!

Best,
Casey

Susan, I have a Milwaukee adjustable-temp heat gun that you are welcome to borrow if you wish. I used it to take the Utah numbers off the 22. Worked great. Let me know.

well I did not get to fish today as promised but the boat is almost done. I have a heat gun, until it quit. It did a good job, but to tell the truth I did better with a razor blade scrapper and the goof off. the blade got the vinyl off and the goof off got most of the glue. a quick swipe of the acetone got off the rest.

Now we have a bare hull but you can still see where the letters where. I will be spending tomorrow night after work using a polisher and a rubbing compound to see if I can get it all to match.

we do plan to make the sequim gathering but we will have to see about the weather. its always blowing that weekend.
