One small winter project I had planned for Wild Blue was putting a couple of bow cleats on to allow a bridle setup for anchoring.
When over drilling and filling for the cleat bolts, I noticed that the windlass had been installed without any sealing for the chain hole or bolts. How factories can send out stuff like this is beyond me, but I know they do it.

Fortunately I was able to dig out the damp core under the whole windlass and with the aid of our current drought and cube heater over a few days made sure all was ready for the filling.

I then used West System6 10 to fill under the windlass and neat epoxy in the overdrilled cleat bolts.

At the same time I serviced the windlass and replaced the lens in the forward hatch.

Good work, looks like you caught it in time.

What happened to the hatch? Cracked or crazed? What did you use to seal the new plastic into the frame?

Hi Boris,
The old lens had a Nicro solar vent in it. Though it wasn't leaking it was pretty ugly to look at from the Vberth. Jim had already purchased the replacement but had not put it in.
The sealant used was the Ultra3000 ? recommended for the lens that also came with it as well as a new gasket.

Thanks Sunbeam, fortunately I have paid attention to some of the best over the years.

I have decided to go ahead and pull the center cleat and back it with some hardwood also like I did the new cleats.
 
Nice work, Tim. Frustrating about the deck around the windlass - glad you found it before it became a real issue. You're doing Wild Blue proud.

Hi Tim, superb workmanship! Great mod to bridle easier.
With the cleats; did you use butyl tape to seal the deckside, and is the hardwood backing a plate you can hang an eyelet from inside?

Yes the cleats and windlass are bedded in butyl. The hardwood I used is Cumaru and yes a eye could be put into it, although at this point I don't have a reason to. When I back the center cleat, because it straddles the anchor locker bulkhead, I will have backing that will show in the Vberth area so I may do something with it.

Another idea/way, which works basically independent of backing block composition, is to use a "ring nut" on one of the studs fastening the hardware. I have a number of these in the V-berth (on the bow pulpit fasteners and 'midship cleat fasteners mostly), and they are handy for various things. I used some from Sea Dog in 316 stainless - they come round or slightly teardrop shaped. Here is an example of what I mean:
