Don't Leave the Boarding Ladder Down

About 2:30 this morning, the dog started a frantic bark, ran to every door in the house and kept barking. I looked out the window, and saw a black bear coming out of the cabin and leaving the boat via the swim step. Shotgun in hand I inspected everything, other than tracks nothing much happened. I am pretty sure the dog heard the bear going up the boarding ladder. I raised the boarding ladder and went back to bed. Thanks to Dusdee for keeping watch while we slept. Otherwise there would have been a mess to clean up.

Dogs are very often more than just pets, and more than just family. Glad you weren't sleeping in the cabin. I'm guessing the cabin door was open too.

May see more detail in the morning, when you can look with both hands, and after the adrenalin wears down a bit.

Stay safe,

Charlie,

It is on the trailer. If we had been on the water I think I would have yelled "prepare to repel borders" and actually used the shotgun. A bear left a "pile" in the driveway the night before that was mixed with berries, candy wrappers, and part of a plastic bag. It's too early for Halloween, so I think we have a garbage bear lurking around.

Oh that's nothing. There's another thread going about a guy with a mouse on board. Actually, I bet you've made him feel a little better.

That's a good story. Thanks.

Tom you may want to keep the cabin door closed and locked also, the boarding ladder is only a deterrent if a bear smells something worthy of inspection. And tell your hillside neighbors to stop feeding the bears. :D
Even in Mid-Town we get the occasional grizzly..go to youtube and type ‘Scat on Kupreanof Street’. My video taken from inside Mini Cooper. I would give the link here but can’t access from work.

Jay,

The door is also only a deterrent. I'm seen too much stuff broken by bears. I think I will try my bear fence and see what happens. I just have to keep the dog out of it.

Agree, better to find bear scat than torn up stuff. The little rascals are becoming quit the pests around these parts lately. It’s too bad the state bear predator program doesn’t extend to Anchorage, but then we’d have a real mess to clean up.
