Downrigger Mounting

I have ordered the Scotty 1106 downriggers and would like to see some pics or get any advice on mounting on my cd-22. I am mounting the removable side mount dive ladder today and would like to check with the sea brats before i mount the riggers, rod holders, and the weight holder cups as I know some of you have found the wheres and whys of mounting and wiring.

Any advise or pictures will be greatly appreciated.

I mounted mine (same Scotties as yours) on the gunnel as far aft as possible and still be able to open the lazerettes. It was a little tedious to do, but when I wired the outlet I put it up under the gunnel with the outlet pointing down to protect it from spray. Other things to consider are if you have canvas-will it still fit after downriggers are mounted? If you type "mounting downriggers" in the search feature you will find many other discussions about the subject and links to photo albums with good pix.

Pic of mine above - I've got the rod holders on the Scotty base, but you can see where the base is mounted.

The gunnels are just barely wide enough to mount the bases - triple check before drilling. I used the bases as a template, but drilled each hole slighly towards the center of the base.

Even so, I had to grind flat the edges of the fender washers underneath, as the bolts were so close to the inside hull edge.
 
Ken. Rather than install the ball holders you might consider the Scotty Downriggr Weight Hook #1147 for 1" booms or 1148 for 1 1/4" booms. I think they are more handy. The holders you could just place in the side pockets loose for travelling if you want. I just leave mine on the boom.

I mounted ours where Dag Nag mounted his, I have not got a good Pic. of this but it works good for me

I think the general consensus is to mount the downriggers just forward of the fuel holes. This position gives ample elbow room for cranking the balls up. As for ball holders ( this is sounding dirty) :oops: I mount them in the shelf just below the the downrigger.

Sometimes I remove the downriggers when I go duck hunting or on a Party Cruise. Having the balls out of the way and out of sight makes for a cleaner cockpit. ( this is going downhill fast :cry: )

This is what works for me despite the sound of it.

Yes I think I like Da Nags set up as well Pandy Girl, Very nice boat you have there as well. Charlie I am going to try tucking my balls below too. Now that you pointed out the visual, I think we all agree its best to keep them tucked away. :smiled

Doug, I put flush mount rod holders in the gunnels on Constant Craving, then bought the Scotty mounts that go into the rod holders. That way, the mount pads are not on the gunnels when you don't want to use down riggers, plus you have another set of rod holders if you want. I also did the samething for my barbeque mount.

For a different idea, and one I wish I had gone with. look at the "Searam" from bc. His boat has the rod holders mounted on custom made alum. brackets in the splash well. This gets the downriggers out of the way when not in use and sets the wire farther back making it less likey to cut the wire with the prop when making sharp turns, which you should not do. I think there are photos in my ablum under princess luisa trip.

This is how mine was originally rigged...but I opted to remove the flush mounts, and place the base plates in their place.

I did like the lower/smoother profile of the flush mount setup when the downriggers were off, along with the versatility of being able to use other rod holder attachments. However, I found the downrigger stability to be troublesome...they rocked back and forth a bit too much for my comfort.

Could very well be paranoia on my part - I've never heard of anyone losing a downrigger with the rod holder mounts, and last I heard, one of our senior fishing pros (Dusty) used them without issue.

But...the downriggers are definitley more stable on the gunnel-attached base plates than they were on the rod holder mounts.

Regardless - if somebody wanted to try the flush mount rod holder setup first, there's no harm done assuming they are placed such that the base plates could cover the hole if it doesn't work out. There's a large hole under my Scotty base plates where the flush mounts were, but nobody would know about it unless they were removed.

One comment to add: Make sure you note that the hole pattern for the Scotty bases is not square on the mounting bolts. There is much more (or some?) clearance inside the gunnel installed one direction. I had mine 90 degrees off at first, fortunately I noticed this before I got out the drill!
