Downrigger placement advice please

I'm going to mount a Scotty swivel base for both a downrigger and a davit for pulling crab traps. For those with some experience in these matters, especially with regards to downriggers, can you please look at my album...the slide titled: Slide 1. I'm thinking of mounting the base at position 2. This would be best for the davit. Is it too far forward for a downrigger? I'm hesitant to put it in position 1, right at the stern, because it's difficult to get into that corner.

Thanks.

I would agree with #2 position. The only issue is if the frame for the Bimini would interfere with the function of either the downriger or davit. My experience with down riggers is on larger boats.. but being a little ways from the transom does not seem like a problem.

Always as far back as is possible and practical. Being placed farther back reduces the risk of the rigger wires/braid hooking up on motors, kickers and just other assorted tangles when sharp turns are made. #1 would be best, but is probably not practical because it won't let you easily access the riggers. That leaves #2 as next best.

If you're using Scottys (preferred) with 60" booms, go with position #2. If you're using the shorter 24" booms, then go with position #1. What Saxe Point said about kickers and turns and such is spot on.

With that said, using a pot puller in position #1 would be a pain in the backside, so I'd go with #2 and ensure I had longer booms on the downrigger. As long as they're Scottys, that is. 8)

Thanks everyone. I will go with position 2 and, of course, I will mount the outrigger base using Bob's recommended over-drill, epoxy, re-drill...etc...procedure.

Here's where I placed mine. If you look at the mount on the port side, you get a better idea of placement.
