Feeling dense...halibut season?

OK, for some reason I had it in my head that halibut was a June fishery, but it looks like most areas close June 2, except Seiku (June 28). Are their other opportunities for halibut during June, and how is the fishing around Seiku/area 5?

Alternatively, how about fishing for lings/cod/etc. in early June, i.e. where's a good spot and how abundant are they? I was thinking of running out of Port Angeles; haven't spent much time offshore but am open to it with another boat with more experience.

Area 5 is not all that bad for halibut. Have not been able to make the season in the last 2 years because of other comitments, but have stuck fish there. Check your charts for humps and bumps to fish and good luck.
 
Halibut season is Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays in May. Area 6, Port Angeles, has been windy and crap weather. Not much success last week from what I heard. We fished for a few hours Thursday and got beat up and came home. Friday weather was total crap. Saturday was decent but found no fish. I heard from one of the sporting goods stores that it has been better out near Dungeness Bank and Protection Island. Pretty windy again today so I stayed home for yard work. :evil:

Supposed to be nice tomorrow and Saturday. You're at the mercy of the wind as most folks here drift. Be prepared for about a 3/4 mile line to launch your boat. It's a real zoo. You're better off to get a slip if any are available.

Ling cod runs May 1-June 15 in Area 6.

Thanks for reminding why I moved away from Washington State.......Halibut is open here right now. And I have never waited any longer than 15 minutes to launch my boat. Unless of course, you count waiting for winter to get over with.....
 
Yeah, I know, it's a lot different. Kodiak spoiled us forever. It was the best 7 years of my life as far as outdoor stuff. Waiting in line to launch your boat? That means there might be one guy in front of you when you show up at the ramp. I think we waited a total of 10 minutes in the last 3 years we were there.

Halibut was only closed in January and there was a 2 fish daily limit. Is that still the case? We rarely came home empty handed. We would have loved to retire up there but it is much more affordable here and the fishing is decent for Outside. We love the climate and beautiful scenery.

The thing that's really laughable is that the Canadian season is also 11 months long...hmmm...just go out 10 miles into the Strait and the rules are way different. It's dumb. Next year, we're probably going to get Canadian tags and go whenever.

Anyway, I'm taking a guy from work out in the morning. Hope we can find some fish.

Halibut are closed for the month of January and that is it in SC AK. I could not afford to live on the kodiak either. Heck, I can't afford to live in Anchorage with the median house going for $350,000 bucks. The best kept secret in Alaska is the Mat-Su. Affordable housing, nice warm summers, incredible scenary, close to the ocean, great salmon rivers, lakes, and it is nearly as affordable as anywhere else in the country. Once again, if I had one wish, it would be a longer summer and a shorter winter. But, who doesn't want that right?

Good luck on your fishing trip. I hope you catch some nice 50 pounders - my favorite size.....
