Freezing pops seals out of water pump -- Yamaha 100 4stroke

I have a 100 HP Yamaha 4 stroke......problem........winter freezing weather has popped the water pump oil/water seals out of the water pump housing (cocked them) causing water to leak into the lower unit gear grease. :( The dealer said all they've done is pushed em back and locktighted them back in. Have you had an experience, or heard of the problem up in good 'ol AK. I wonder if it is just a bad design for the 100's or if there is a new part, new seal, or different housing that might take care of it. Thanks, Digger

Digger: Just wondering. Did this happen with the boat on the trailer? Or boat in the water with motor tipped up? Not positive but I think that lower unit is used on 75 thru 115. I have noticed if I unscrew the fresh water adapter after the motor has drained in the down position on the trailer I get more water out of the fitting. Not sure if this would cuase and trouble but it couldn't help in freezing weather.

This happened on a trailer, in my garage, with the motor down. I've just been told that in addition to loctiting the seals in, a drainage hole is enlarged to assist in draining. Got to find out what size to drill out the hole, I guess. Supposedly, the part numbers for current models are still the same. Ron

Ron, nope never heard of it up here in old Alaskie! :|

I always worry about that kind of stuff though (even though it's not happened to me) I always let the engine drain out before I let it sit on trailer in the up position (while trailering home) just to not let sea-water sit in the housing for long, getting stagnant and growing little (itty-bitty) sea-monsters :x I don't always get a chance to flush it out either.
