Some of you know what I do for a living. My friend and co-worker, Sgt Wing Woo, was seriously injured while vacationing on Mau'i. Wing is an avid fisherman and is the among the most fun-loving, mellow, hilarious and compassionate men I know. He has been a KC deputy/detective/sergeant for 32 yrs.

Wing and his family, wife and two kids, went there to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary. On the first day of the trip, Wing and his 14 yr old son, Tony, decided to go body surfing.

Wing was seriously injured; he was knocked unconscious. He was thrown onto the sand by a wave and suffered a serious head trauma. Tony found him face down in the surf. Wing suffered cardiac arrest but was revived thanks to his son & life-guards. He was transported to Mau'i Memorial Hospital in a coma. He had aspirated not only salt water but sand and remained in a coma for a few days. I got the call Saturday and it did not appear as though he would survive.

This week, Wing was finally stable enough to breathe on his own for 45 minutes and the doctors ordered an MRI. Wing's brain showed activity and his heart was good, but it was discovered that he suffered a spinal injury; what was described as "severe swelling". He initially had no feeling from his chest down, but has since "wiggled" his fingers and toes.

Thanks to the generosity of many, he is now en-route from Mau'i to Seattle via a Lear jet medical transport. He will be admitted to Harborview to get the best spinal injury treatment available.

Below is a news report. Mahalo to all for their thoughts, prayers or donations. His recovery will be long and difficult and he will need all the support and assistance we all can muster for him. A more deserving person you will not meet. Wing did not deserve this. For anyone who feels they would like to help, there is a GoFundMe page set up to assist him and his family. God bless.

Mark, Thanks for passing on that story. That is a tough one to take. My hats off to you, Wings and your brothers. Rare "Thank you's" on the job, but well deserved. Your friend is lucky to be so well taken care of. My prayers go out for him and his family, and for those of you who are his support. Prayers for a quick recovery.
