fuel tanks

I have recently bought a 1990 22' cruiser and have discovered a fuel leak in my starboard tank (18 gal tempo). New tanks run about $160.00 each. Is there a larger single replacement tank that can be retro fitted in this boat?

Believe it or not, I have a brand-new, never installed spare tank which I believe is the starboard tank. I'd let it go for considerably less than the price you mention. I'll confirm which side it is this weekend when we're up at the cabin and haul it home if it's the right one. E-mail me. Mike.

Hi Darrel, Welcome to the C-Brats site. I had a 22 before my 25. Nothing is impossible, but, the configuration of the two tanks allows room for both the drain plug access and one of the two bilge pumps. If you put in a larger tank to replace the two singles you would lose the access to both of these. I would just replace the leaking tank if it was me.

I know of at least one boat which had a custom or semi custom built tank which is aluminum (I believe) and is larger than the two tanks which are the standard.

A number of boats put the drain plug in from the outside--so that is not an issue--the bilge pump can be, but there are farily simple ways around that--one of which is to use a diaphragm pump, with a pickup tube in the lowest part of the bilge aft. (Jabsco made/makes such bilge pumps, and they are true displacement pumps, rather than vane type of the cheaper Rule pumps.)
