I have a Garmin 498 and the screen is cluttered with C's and T's. I know that these are markers of some type, but I don't want to see them unless I need them at a particular time. Can you tell me which setting controls this?

Garmin has a pretty good website and you can ask questions there too. Let your fingers do the walking!

Main Menu --> Maps Tab --> Details sub menu.

This controls the default level of details displayed on the map.

Also - could search on google "garmin 498 manual". The above information is on page 62 of the manual.

C is current and T is tide station.

Adjusting the map detail should help, as it will eliminate them when you are zoomed out.

I've reopened this old thread just because it has the right subject line.

My Garmin 498 is going into its 10th season and still works great (knock on teak). But according to the Garmin site, I can no longer update the chart card.

Anybody know of an alternative for getting updates for discontinued gear? I hate to have to buy (and be re-trained on) a new unit when the old one still works fine.

I would call and or email and verify

Which map version and firmware are installed currently.

It appears as if you can update to the latest software--which is a few years old--and I suggest that you do that if you have not.

As for updating charts--I doubt that you will be able to do that, unless someone has done a hack, and can get the correct format.

Thanks for the helpful responses. I'll give Garmin customer service another try.
