Any experience with this handheld VHF/GPS. Seems the ultimate backup, or too good to be true? Can even send your GPS coordinates.

yes, one of the 520/530 series, & not sure if the hcx is meaningful.

If you are going to use the GMS radio, you have to have a license. The FMS radio is about like any of the other FMS units. Probably a bit better quality however.
Thru the years there have also been some VHF radio/GPS units. Which might be a little more practical for rescue purposes..
