Good way to get hurt

I was cruising the web yesterday and ran across this device. the boat loop I just could not believe some one would sell a device that allows people to wrap around your hand and then around a unmovable object while in a moving boat. The first thing I ever learned about boats and rope is NEVER wrap a line around your hand, arm, or body ( thank you dad, grandpa and every adult I ever meet on the water). I would not have a problem with this device if it was just a handle on one end but I know that people are going to place their hand in a loop and reaching out of a moving boat to grab a unmovable cleat, piling, or dock??? is it just me or does this seem crazy?

Physics should be a mandatory class EVERY YEAR from 2nd grade on.

Tom, the way they are showing it being used should be OK. As long as you don't stick your arm through the little loop and then hold on to the stick. Not much different than using the hook end of a boat hook to grab something while holding onto the tube end of the device.

It's just you...

I like the simplicity but it really doesn't even need the small loop on the end and could function like a boat hook with a loop on the end. We use our boat hook on cleats sometimes and that works well enough. If I were using the boat alone, I would probably devise something like that.

I noticed they warn against putting it around your neck but not around the wrist. Might be more useful of it were extendable as well.

Look at what people do with cars and alcohol, it's part of natural selection. Sometimes dumb people have dumb kids.

I just think that guest on the boat would naturally slide their wrist in the small loop. its a hazard that should not be presented to the stupid or unknowing in the first place. when they do get hurt guess who they are going to sue first?? The boat owner..

other wise I thing its a great idea. might have to make a modified one for susan with out the small loop.

If the small loop was replaced by about two feet of 1/2 or 5/8 th's line with a stopper knot at the end and in the middle, it would be a safer tool. If the boat is pulling too hard to hold onto a line with knots, then letting go would be safe.

This should be easy to make using SS cable (for stiffness) for the large loop extending up the handle, ending in a small-1" loop outside of the other end. Tie the line to the small loop. The small loop should not be so large as to permit someone putting their hand in the loop, just large enough to accept the line/grip. I would use an old boat hook tube for the handle.

Be careful here. If we complain enough, the govmint will pass a new law and someone will post lewd pictures of a congressman using it. I think it's a neat idea but will continue to use my boat hook for the same purpose. After alll I fell off the side of my boat on the lift into 4' of water and could have drowned if I hadn't stood up!

I'm just going to repeat my comment from the E_Z docker thead that if you simply slide a length of water hose over the end of a line and make a loop, it will stay "open" and you can simply drop it over a cleat from the end of your boathook.

No Cowboy or Congressional skills involved and much cheaper than the S/S Hooker.

...and much cheaper than the S/S Hooker.

I've seen a few of those, especially in Waikiki, Vegas and Houston. But the one's I've encountered here are more the old, used, rusted versions that've obviously been used a lot. :P

We purchased a "Landing Loop" that is basically an expandable pole with a y shaped end with tips that hold the rope. To use, you loop the line through one end, creating a nice loop, extend over the cleat and pull the rope. You then tie the other end TO THE BOAT. I love this thing. Of course, I now have "floatation" (cut pieces of a noodle tie wrapped) to the y end after having it fall loose in the water and sink.

The hose on the rope is a great idea. We always are challenged by fixed short finger piers with pilings out front to tie to. My wife is not tall. Getting a line around a piling can be a real circus to watch. For some reason the Chesapeake Bay area has a lot of these kinds of set ups. I'm going to give a couple of my lines a hosin and see how that works for babygirl. Thanks Grumpy! :)

How about an animal control pole with a sliding loop, like the animal control officers use. Longer, extendable and a single loop for the cleat and no loop for the wrist.
