Caryn and I just spent a wonderful 11th Anniversary holiday in Friday Harbor. It was the first time that I can remember that FH was actually HOT with virtually no wind, truly amazing weather. We had the good fortune to cash in a gift certificate given to Caryn for a 2-night stay at the fabulous Friday Harbor House with an incredible view of the marina and a surprisingly good inclusive breakfast.
Caryn and I discussed prior to arriving that we would probably run into at least one C-Brat during our stay and we were correct. We were lucky to spend time with Don Gonser of Knotty-C, one of the first people we met at our first gathering at Lopez Island way back in 2005. Don was gracious enough to give us a very thoughtful gift of an evening cruise aboard the schooner Spike Africa on our anniversary night on Sunday. Thanks again Don for the wonderful cruise. We also were able to connect with Jim and Joan, having a nice visit with them on Wild Blue.
The water conditions were unbelievable all weekend. Because the water was so flat, we decided to take the "outside" route from Edmonds to Friday Harbor, via Admiralty Inlet, past Port Townsend, up the west side of Whidbey Island in the Stait of San Juan de Fuca and through a flat Cattle Pass. Total time: 3:25
We also decided to look for Orca Whales on the west side of San Juan Island Sunday morning. After not having any luck in the beginning, we decided to do some fishing near Eagle Point. I had a feeling the Orcas would be coming from the north through Rosario Strait with a right turn into SdF Strait after hearing radio chatter and reports that they were north the day before. Sure enough, two pods came directly through our fishing spot. We saw as least 20 Orcas, it was amazing!
The ride home was calm and flat but very scenic as we decided to go inside the SJI's on the way home. All in all, we had a wonderful 11th anniversary in the beautiful San Juan Islands. Can't wait to see what's in store for us next year!
