Gulf Islands for dogs and bringing in meat

We are planning a trip up to the Gulf Islands and it's a little confusing when it comes to taking our dog. Besides her current rabies vaccination and U.S. made and packaged dog food, what else?
I am reading we may need to have her inspected and have to pay $30 fee.

Hi Patrick and Kim,

Nice to have the furry family members with you when you travel. Izzy, and before her, Molly, came with us on our trips to Canada. Seems that the regulations changed slightly from year to year. We were specifically told we could not bring any pet food that contained beef one year. Most of the time, there was no question about canned or packaged pet food.

We carried a vaccination record, including the reg number of the rabies shot, showing they were current. Only one time were we asked for that info. I carried that record with me, along with passports, when checking in.

There was no mention of a $30 fee, but it was 2014 when we last took Izzy into Canada.

We have made multiple trips into Canada since the 1970s with dogs. We have never had to pay a fee. Never any questions about canned or dry dog foot. We do have a folder with the dog's health records, and have usually had statement of the dog's health status from our vet. We have also used a USDA form for "importation" of pets when traveling extensively to a number of countries, but not from Canada.

We last did this in 2013, so it is possible that the rules have changed. Many times we have checked in by phone--but when the Canadian immigration/customs service came aboard or saw us in the tow vehicle the only questions were about the vaccinations. I read the current regulations as a pet which is shipped, there is a $30 fee for first and $5 for others. I suspect that they will not charge for a personal pet--but be prepared.

I let customs ask the questions-don't volunteer anything. Be polite but don't enumerate.
 
Judging by how many Americans on boats that we see up here with dogs aboard I can't see there being any problem or fees. I would no problem for us to take our two dogs with us to the states. As has been mentioned we just made sure we had up to date vaccinations of the dogs and proof there of.

We just returned yesterday from two weeks in BC. We took Captain Bella the Pug and her rabies certificate. We were not questioned about Captain Bella nor was there a dog inspection. We visit Canada once or twice per month, have for years, and CBSA has never targeted Captain Bella or even taken interest.

My wife and I just returned from the Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) office
in Sault St Marie, MI where we completed and passed our NEXUS personal
interviews. As low risk travelers, ;-) , the NEXUS card allows us to expedite
border crossings to and from Canada which we do by land and sea now
considerably quicker.

We asked about our pooch and what he required. The only thing mentioned
was a current rabies vaccination certified by our Vet in writing. No mention
about dog food and the "rabies dog tags don't mean anything, you need the
paper certification".

Though the interview was on the US side with a US CBP agent, a Canadian
CBP agent was present and concurred with what was told to us by the US
agent.

Aye, hosers.
