Hailer/Horn Longevity

Just replaced my Standard Horizon, 240, Hailer/Horn and found the wiring had corroded in side the horn. Didn't like that much. The mounting and wiring up to the horn were good but apparently inside the horn is where it gave up after 2 seasons. Yes it is mounted where it is exposed, and yes it is rinsed in fresh water after each outing. Curious what others are experiencing with similar equipment. How long are you finding for a life span? What are you doing to make them last? What is an average lifespan? What can we do to lengthen that?

I don't know what your exact setup looks like, so this may or may not be applicable, but do you have the horn mounted in such a way that the bell is angled down (so that it sheds water)? If not, that can cause early demise.

Agree with the bell angled down--but also a Sunbrella cover sill keep salt water out. I have had variable experience with loud hailer horns. On the current boat I have it set up so I can easily remove it, with a trailer type of two conductor connector, and into a starboard block with machine screws--the nuts mounted under the starboard block.

The photo with the thread message is my boat, and yes it is tilted down slightly. It is always rinsed with fresh water after each outing. Hmmmm, maybe not such a good idea after all.

I like the idea of a sunbrella cover. Would it work to just leave it on all the time? That I can try. I like the idea of remove and replace less, but if it comes to that it could work.

Back to longevity. Has anyone had to replace a hailer/horn yet? And if so, why, and how old was it?
