I have a 90 Honda (2007) The water pump is the Org. the pressure is still strong from the wheep hole, it has 452 Hrs. on it. On another Honda 75 hp that I had before this one it had 650hrs. on before I changed it,steal strong at the wheep hole. Changed it and about 75 hrs. later in went bad. So when or how often should it be changed? (Plan to do some long cruises in Fl. this winter (150 miles or more) Thanks Jim

We have 1000 hours on our 2006 Honda 90's and have not changed the water pumps yet. Good question as I have been wondering the same thing. We did change out our thermostats and they could of been replaced a few years earlier. They were in horrible condition.
Thanks for bring this topic up.

I know it is a different animal, (Yamaha) but I had mine changed at 300 hours, and they still looked good and pressure was good. I tend to like doing that sort of thing early better than late. I would probably do it earlier than the Honda manual recommends. On mine I believe the recommend is 600 hours. I also think it depends on where you are boating: fresh vs salt, lake vs ocean etc.

The water pump might last 10 yrs or more in fresh water but the reason to take the pump out it to take the lower unit off before it corrodes so bad you do damage to it . living in SW florida I try to change mine every 2years . that way my lower unit comes right off .
Jim you might want to take it off and replace the impellers the unit itself usually is in good shape .I just replaced the unit on a 40 honda I think it was under $90 for the whole kit

I agree with Jennykatz--You do want to take the Honda lower unit apart on a regular basis. If an impeller is allowed to sit in one place it will take a "set" and brake blades--which leads to complications with obstructions in the water passages. Also good points about thermostats.

I generally change the impeller every 2 to 4 years, and at 200 hours--depending on use. In salt, sandy or silty water, you want to change at the lower times. For fresh water, then more time is most likely acceptable.

If a motor has sat around and not used--even if new--then change out the impeller. Also you want to change the seals and housing, as well as gaskets.

What impact does the use of "SALT AWAY" have when used each time the HONDA 90 is run is salt water? Water pressure gauges look the same as when new at all speeds and RPMs. 425 hrs on the 2005 '90.
