I have had good and bad luck myself but the bad luck was probably the result of over-crimping on my part.

I have the greatest respect for Bill Bishop (the author). He starts the article with the following caveat:

a caveat the connector is going to live in a dry environment. If your connections are going to be exposed to rain and saltwater even if only rarely use the the traditional solder/crimp connectors. Like all connectors there are some pluses and minuses, starting with varying db losses, the need for special tools, and so on.
 
The more I learn about VHF connectors the more I appreciate Digital brand antennas and their solution to said issues..
