How to remove decal from boat

What is the preferred method for removing a decal from the boat?

Assuming you're talking about decals on the hull itself, I've always had good luck with using a hair dryer or heat gun on medium setting when removing decals from fiberglass. Carefully warm the decal up and it will peel off fairly easily. Just take your time and raise the temperature slowly.
 
Hair dryer is what I used Fred. And a safety razor blade to get under the edge to get it started. Just takes time and patience but when I was through and waxed the area you couldn't tell anything had been there.

Ditto on the hair drier and safety razor or plastic scraper to lift the corner of the letters. " Turtle Wax Bug and Tar Remover" cleans up the glue residue; works:thup .

Thanks for the help. I think I will use my heatgun on low and like you guys said, take my time.

Careful with "heat gun" :!: I found both fiberglass and gelcoat doesn't take to kindly to a lot of heat... :!:
 
How do you remove Duct Tape? :smilep
 
If the duct tape is fairly fresh, simply strip it off by hand, and then remove the remaining adhesive with a suitable solvent. I like to use laquer thinner, as it has a half dozen solvents in it that will dissolve just about anything. Dont spill it anywhere you don't need it. Wax the hull after the removal, as the solvent removes the wax, too. Old duct tape works the same way, except tht almost all the adhesive is left behind and has to be dissolved. Joe.
 
Goof-off (a product, not a pastime) is great for duct tape adhesive removal as well as dozens of other nasty removal tasks. Lots safer than more volatile substances, though I've also used barbecue fire starter fluid successfully.

Acetone works very good for the sticky stuff. Robbin has some in her purse, I'm sure. I remember that time at the pub in Olympia when her and C-Lou were comparing purse contents. Good chance she has several things in there that would work. But finger nail polish remover is just expensive acetone with some perfume in it, I do believe.

Kinda sad, ain't it Fred? Maybe you should let Brock peel the name off for you. You know he won't mess anything up, him being Mr. Neatness and all.
 
You know Mike you are right. They say to use a blow dryer to get the decal off. If I remember right when Robbin dumped her purse that night I think a blow dryer fell out. Sometimes I am not sure I need a tool bag when she is along.

All this talk about solvents reminds me of a very handy solvent I use often: WD-40. If you have acetone, paint thinner, or Goof-off they work great, but usually I need to remove some sticky mess when I don't have them available. I almost always have some WD-40. As a bonus it is very safe to use.
