how to shelter honda gen from rain while running

Looking for ideas on how to operate my Honda gen while it is raining out. Don't have a bimini as of yet. All advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks
 
Hi - What model do you have? I have purchased, but not used, the Honda cover for the i2000 model. The reviews say that it is a very tight fit which sounds good to me.

I am interested in this topic as well so I look forward to an answer from others who have experience.
 
I don't have a pic of mine but imagine this. Cut out a piece of foam mat (I used a cheap 5/16-3/8 thick yoga version) a few inches larger than the footprint of your generator. Now get yourself a cheap spring clamp like this:

Lay the foam on top of the generator and clip the clamp to the top carry handle OVER the foam. This will hold the foam on the generator like a flexible foam hat without contacting exhaust and allowing for good airflow. Be sure and use the rubbery type closed cell foam so it does not soak up the rain as well. Makes a useful seat pad or mat when not shedding rain.

Johnbenj, The Honda or home made covers are not for use while running. All cooling vents would be covered.
 
I did purchase a Honda vinyl cover and you are correct, not to be used while running. I was thinking about building a box, that would house the Honda 2000, make the sides so that they can hinge in an up position as a roof for the Honda, all supported by the four post which support the sides and top. Any suggestions always appreciated.
 
Just finished mounting my Honda 2000 I, never thought it couldn't function correctly in the rain! I'd be interested in hearing more about this. Also made a nice 20 amp cable to plug it into the 30 amp shore power inlet. Hey we have ONLY had 11" of rain in the last 4days, RAIN? Too much! Roy
 
We had an extra Sunbrella rear window cover from the Tom Cat (actually a whole set, since they made them in the wrong color). We just made a frame for the Sunbrella cover --it was about 24 x 18" and mounted it over the generator. Kept the majority of the rain off, and the generator runs fine under this.

You want to have free flow of both cooling air and ability of exhaust to be swept away by the breeze!

I found a soft sided pet carrier that fits my Yamaha 1000is perfectly. It has roll up windows at the ends and sides, and folds for storage. I found it on Ebay.

So, I've been brain storming and think maybe this might work, if I locat the gen on the bow of boat, then fasten canvas onto the bow rail and stretch it over and above the gen and attach other end onto the rounded portion, above the stateroom, using snaps! The center of the canvas could be pushed up by means of a short pole. This way would have plenty of air flow and sheltered from rain, when not needed just fold up and stow away. So guys how does this sound? Jim, you have a great firstmate in sandy! Don't know if Linda would buy that!

Sounds good for rain shelter, but I'd be concerned that carbon monoxide fumes would enter the cabin, especially if the boat is swinging at anchor, which would make the wind follow back along the boat from the bow.

Agree with Joe--we always put the generator on the swim step with exhaust pointing aft. On the Tom at it was fairly easy to stretch the Sunbrella from the aft railing over and secure the aft end on the outboard. For a 22, make a PVC frame to hold the canvas in place and over the generator.
 
Going with the swim platform is my second option. Last weekend we had the gen running while placed upon the bow. Wasn't a problem but I do understand gas fumes are heavier the air and thus migrate to lowest level. The pvc frame with canvas sounds the way to go.

On the Comfy Dory, I have mounted 2 rod holders vertically on the inside surface of the lazarettes. We set the Honda 1000 EU on top of the lazarette with bungees to secure. Then open an umbrella and put it into one of the rod holders and it covers the Honda and allows plenty of ventilation for the generator. Honda is set with exhaust to the rear.
