I need a new starboard front window.

Hi Folk's

We have a 1987 22FT. C-dory angler and about five YRS. ago we picked up a small rock chip on our starboard front window. It was about the size of a pencil lead and isn't in the line of sight and wasn't a big deal. Than this winter while the boat was sitting in our shop the chip decided to grow and get bigger and I sure would like to replace it. I called the Triton Factory and they informed me that they buy their glass from Diamond Sea glaze which is a B.C Company. I have called them twice and the nice considerate people in the sales DEPT. have not returned my call. I was wondering if someone could please point me in the right direction where I could find a replacement window. Thank you in advance.

When give Diamond Sea Glaze a call (their phone number is 800-770-0455)
ask for Kim Parley, he is the one that handles the Triton Marine account. Alternatively, if he's not there, tell them specifically what you need and they'll generally hook you up with the appropriate person on the spot. I just ordered 4 blank keys for my Tomcat door from them yesterday with no problem.

Can a local glass company replace the glass itself?
That's also an option. When my Tomcat was delivered and the window was broken during delivery, Cory Gracy of Sharp Yacht transport measured the window, obtained the glass locally and replaced it himself. I think he took a piece of the glass with him to the local vendor so they knew the color/tint on it. You might give Cory a call to see where he went. His number is 425-508-0802

That is a good question Matt, thank you for asking. I am going out today and look to see if the window frame is split and can be taken apart. If so I should be able to take it out of the boat and take it to a local glass shop and have it replaced. I also wanted to thank Roger & Brent for the information that you posted.

Jeff,

If it's like all the other Sea Glaze windows I have seen, the frame is two pieces - one on the outside and one on the inside held together by screws (typically square drive screws). The frames can be easily taken apart to access the glass. There's a rubber gasket all the way around and Cory used some black, pliable sealant between it and the window. I can't remember the name of the sealant but it's available in a caulking gun tube. Cory would know.

I have resealed several of my windows over the last few years. I have also moved my door window to a new door. So you do not need to remove the window its self to replace the glass. Dont go pulling out all the screws in the window frame. Take a knife or a screw driver and find the end of the rubber gasket. carefully pry up one end and get a hold of it on your hand. Then pull the rubber gasket toward the center of the window and away from the direction it came ?? pull it back on its self in the direction you are going?? you will figure it out. The rubber seal will pull out once you get it going. after you get the rubber out you will need two people or be able to reach both sides of the glass your self. Careful press on the glass on the inside near the edge until it comes loose. You may have to use a razor or the edge of a scraper to start the glass separating from the glue that holds it to the frame. Once its out Go to a glass shop and they should be able to cut or order you a new piece. While there buy some window glue, putty, adhesive, what every your local shop calls it or use 4200.

When you replace the glass use the glue on the inside of the frame and then place the glass in the frame on the glue. wiggle it around a little and get the air out as best you can but dont obsess over it. Once the glass is centered you can start to put the rubber back in. Start at the bottom or top in the center. work the rubber in with your hand and a straight edge but not a sharp edge. make sure the corners are tight. a little Windex on the glass will help it slide into place. Hope this helps.

First and foremost I want to thank you all for your advice. I have been dreading the day that I was going to have to tackle this job and getting your advice helped me to be able to think it out before starting on this project really has helped out. I called Block & Olson Glass Company here in Vancouver, WA. this morning and they said that if I bring the glass in they can cut me a new piece of glass for $37.50 and I will be able to pick the new glass up the same day that I drop the old window off. Thank you again for all your help. I sure appreciate it.

Jeff
