One of the Navy's latest warships coming under the Coronado Bridge a few days ago. Heading for deployment in the Western Pacific. USS FREEDOM LCS 1 (Littoral Combat Ship)
They have blue/gold crews that trade off every four months like SSBNs.
The Navy will have 26 of these by the end of the decade and 55 by the end of the 2020s. Camo paint is part of the stealth but the real stealth is in the RCS (Radar Cross Section) and other things.
For those interested, it is a hard chine deep-vee hullform that employs dynamic lift. It is an advanced semi-planing monohull based on a combination of the Destriero ocean racing yatch and Jupiter Italian Ferry. The ship does indeed plane. It has very good seakeeping and ship motions in sea states; accelerates to top speed in 2 minutes;
stops in less than three ship lengths from 30 knots; completes a 360 degree turn in less than 8 ship lengths at 43 knots; and completes a 180 degree turn in 3 ship lengths at 30 knots and full load. .IMG_2466_Freedom_coming_under_Coronado_Bridge.jpg

Hi Charlie,

What an interesting vessel. What is it's mission? Will it carry Marines or SEAL teams to go ashore or surveillance? Given that it has alternating crews, is it planned to be on station for long periods?

Charlie-

What's that old joke about "The Captain wants to water ski!"

Sounds like we've got the tool for the job! :lol:

The ship is designed to engage in different missions by changing "mission modules" in a matter of a few hours at various ports. If you google Littoral Combat Ship you can read all about it.

Right on Dave, and if you also Google <mobile sea base> [MSB], you'll see how the Navy plans to get those mission modules to far places. FREEDOM Is going to Singapore for 10 months -one month over-eight months there with two different crews - one month home.
