Is anyone heading out of Newport for Halibut on June 3rd?

Would love to chat with anyone who has launched out of there and what they learned fishing for Halibut. Really enjoyed my 3 summers in Homer Alaska as a Halibut charter deckhand many years ago. Looking to carefully get back out there and catch a butt!

I can tell you right now that I am not your guy for this one, but the guy who has TyBoo's sister ship certainly is. You met him - Stevej - at Cathlamet last April on Shearwater. I believe this time of year he has his boat moored in Newport and spends as much time as he can down there. You might try emailing him through his Profile link if he doesn't check in here.

Mr. Fisherman Ray also runs out of Newport quite a bit.

I went out a couple weekends ago. The conditions were perfect. Had a great time. We caught our limit but the average size could have been better. You need to watch the tides and ocean swell. Incoming tides are best for crossing any bar but sometimes with a small tidal exchange you can cross on an ebb. Some halibut are caught a few miles straight out from the yaquina light house in around 200-250 feet of water but it's mostly scratch fishing. The next closest spot (13-15 nm) is stonewall banks, otherwise known as the "rock pile". The actual reef is closed to fishing to protect the yellow eye and canary rockfish so you have to fish around this "exclusion" area. The gps coordinates are in the fishing regulations. Most people fish the southeast corner of this zone (don't worry you will see plenty of boats). The next popular place is the "chicken ranch" and is approximately 32 nm out and 600 feet deep. Bring 32 to 48 ounces of lead :shock: and a strong arm. You might check out www.ifish.net for more fishing info. Click on discussions and then go to the salty dog forum. Thanks for the info...very helpful. Trying to learn everything I can before heading out there. I'll be anxious to run into you some time living in Tigard and all. Love the name of the new boat!

Going to try and go out of Newport on Sat. June 17th if still open and weather permits.

Well I went over to Newport without the boat. A friend and I decided to hold off due to weather forecasts...come to find out, after talking with folks pulling their boats in, that the weather was incredible with no rain! Go figure....OH WELL...we plan on going either next weekend or the weekend after if still open???

Everyone seemed to be pulling in 1 Halibut.

Sure enjoyed the day walking around!
