Lake Powell fall 2019

I haven't seen much discussion on cruising Lake Powell this fall. There was a gathering most past years, on or around the third weekend in September. Anyone planning to go this year?

We have commitments during that week this year, but we are planning to be at Lake Powell in early October. Anyone going to Powell in October?

We launch from Bullfrog Bay on the upper end of the Lake.

Me & hopefully JoLee plan to be at Oak Canyon on Sept 28th & maybe a day or two before that too. We can’t stay more than a few days into Oct due to a grandkids birthday. It sure would be good if you could start out a few days earlier than planned.

We intend to launch at Wahweap on or about 9/25. We can be at Oak Canyon on Sept 27 & 28. We need to take out on or about Oct 1.

It appears the lake elevation will be 20 some feet above where it was last year.

I’m going to work on Rob to convince him but we’ll already have been out (San Juan’s and Gulf Islands) for several weeks so it’s hard to know if we’ll be able to come. It would be fun to see everyone again.

Looks like the Defiance House Ruins are closed.

We were in Defiance House last October. A major storm occurred two nights before and when we arrived at the trail much of the stream bed was washed out. There were 3 foot high hail drifts and lots of fallen logs and debris in the stream bed. We had a difficult time walking up the canyon to the ruins and during our visit the Chief Ranger arrived and was shocked by the damage done by the flash flood. On the walk out I followed the stream back down to the lake and near the delta I discovered that I was crotch deep in quick sand. Luckily I had my walking poles with me and I was barefoot and was able to turn around and get out. Judy was on the the other side on dry ground and was worried that all they would find was my hat after I sunk in the quicksand.

I hiked to Defiance House after the washout. It was a goat path with cairns marking what different people thought was the best path. None of the options were very good. Most people were turned back early because of a lack of proper footgear.

I’m now in Oak Canyon Bay just across from the spot last year in a hard to see but great spot nook. Will be there until Sunday. See you soon JODY & C-View crew & anyone else that shows up.. can’t post from Oak Bay. I’m writing this on the way back from Dangling Rope in the little Kaboat

It’s been very good weather. Last night some wind & a few clouds, but overall between 76 & 86 degrees for highs & lows in the fifties & sunny. From now to about mid Oct, I think is the best time of the year for here.

I’m sitting in the Kaboat again now just above the junction where the the San Juan comes in & the Kaboat is topside up  It runs good here topping out at about 14 mph.

Jody & I checked Reflection on the way back from Oak Bay to Iceberg. My first time in that Canyon & neat to see with Jody saying it looks even better with the lake down more.

I had a wonderful 12 days on the lake with most of the time by myself. JoLee is still improving from her neck surgery & making progress with the arthritis, but still not up to extended days on the boat, so missed Lake Powell again this year. Great exploring on the Kaboat & made over a 100 miles doing just that. Also good to see Tony & Diana with their C-View again, as they have been to many of the same Gatherings on Lake Powell as we. Also always great to spend time with Jody & his dog Maggie. Jody & I along with Bill & his 23 Ranger Tug plan on cruising SE Alaska out of Skagway starting next May. The HunkyDory is now being made ready for winter & me already dreaming of being back in Alaska.

I posted some photos of the trip in my album.

Always great to cruise Lake Powell had a good time. Get to spend the winter getting ready for Alaska very excited for that trip it has been a long time coming. Here's Reflection at the lower water levels. You can see if the water was maybe 20 feet lower than this it is an interesting spot. Working your way around the rocks. Just google images "reflection canyon lake powell" there are some great photographs out there.

We enjoyed our time at Lake Powell despite being holed up for 2 days in Oak Bay due to high winds. We enjoyed visiting with Jay (Hunky Dory) and Jody (Voyager). I've posted some pictures in our album

Tony & Diane,

I noticed the mice blockers in your photos. Thanks again for the traps of which, I caught 3 mice in the boat. I’ll be doing it your way in the future. Jody got mice aboard even with the plates. They must of come up the anchor chain. It was sure good seeing you two again & sharing good conversations.

Jay,

It was good to finally meet you. I finally got my C-Brats account all fixed yesterday, so am back after about a two year hiatus. Good to see Tony & Diane as well as Jody too.

Didn't even know you guys were going to be there, so it was good to stumble upon you all. Too bad I had to get my guest back home, but I was glad to get off the lake before the wind blew. Managed to get pulled out just as it started and by the time I got to Green River we could barely see across the street. How was it Saturday night and Sunday for all of you?

One of these days I'll get to Alaska, but I sure have a lot to do before that will ever happen.

Tony

Tony good to see you on the lake maybe one day will get the timing right and be able to camp together. What do you need to do to get your boat ready for Alaska?
