Lake powell late september/early October?

We will try to make this gathering. Cedar Canyon is a good spot for those launching from Bullfrog or Halls marinas. At mile 110 it's a long way from Wahweep. On the other hand, most years everyone eventually came up to Forgotten Canyon anyway. An up lake gathering is best for us.

For what its worth, Dangling Rope marina does not have pompous or potable water available. Drinking water is available in 1 and 2.5 gallon containers. Not sure of when the D R Marina will close this year, but probably will be closed in Oct??

Unfortunately we can no longer to to Powell, but have friends who are thinking about being there in mid Sept to early Oct.

You could just launch at Halls or Bullfrog. Most of the years we end up at Forgotten which is the next canyon down from Cedar. I agreed to meet Mistery Girl from South Carolina there on Saturday. Hope you can make it up that way.

Not this year, but we plan to be there on Oct 14, 2023 for the annular solar eclipse that will pass right over at around 10:30 am. Yes, we plan ahead :smiled

Steve, Sure hope I can be there for that. I would love it. Probably not have to worry about having clouds in the way.

You gotta make this one, and you've got plenty of time to get ready for it! Afterwards go over to NM, then later we need to get together again and cruise on the Colorado river. Could be some really good times and very likely have some pretty fair skys.

Steve, Sure hope so. Sounds like a great time. Thanks for putting that date up.

Yes I could, of course it is quite a bit more driving to get there from Tucson.
So, the question is: extra miles on the road or extra miles on the water. I'll figure it out. How is the ramp in Halls?

Halls crossing is a good ramp. C-Traveler a C-Dory 25 launched there two weeks ago and had no trouble in and out. That is where I will launch from after I leave Yellowstone and make a few stops in Colorado later this month.

That's me. After several past years launching a 22 at Bullfrog, this being my first year with a 25, I needed a steeper/deeper ramp. Halls Crossing worked great. Also much quieter than Bullfrog as for traffic. (Fewer others to share the ramp and parking with.) My preference in the future will be Halls Crossing! A few miles farther to get to from the midwest, but worth it. I was at my folks in Goodyear before heading up there. Would have loved to taken the Moki Dugway, but whimped out and chose to go almost to Blanding before turning in towards the road to Halls. (Head up north out of Flag, hang a right thru Tuba City, continue towards Mexican Hat. If you're feeling brave, turn off for the Dugway there. It's only 3 miles of 11% grade on gravel with sharp switchbacks on the edge of the plateu, but cuts off about 40 - 60 miles. Colby

Bill, thanks and looking forward to meet again.
Colby, I heard about the Dugway but i did not realize it was 11% grade!!
Sorry we missed you.
Alain

Here's an early morning shot of the Moki Dugway I took last March on a trip to SE Utah and Colorado.

I would be ok with towing my 22 up the hill but not so sure about coming down. My trailer has surge brakes, which changes things, but would probably ok in 4wl. It's really only a 10%er. Slow and steady wins that race.

The road at the bottom is the one going to Mexican Hat.

Great picture. Is the road surface well graded and compacted or is there any looseness especially in the hairpins that would make loose traction?

The few times I've been up and down it the road has been very well maintained. After a good rain there may be a rut or two but, for the most part, pretty smooth. The turns aren't really that bad either. Just make sure no one is coming from the other direction, go wide, and take your time.

The worst part about the whole thing is the shear drops with nothing stopping you if you happen to go over the side. Focus on the task at hand and you'll be fine.

Alain, there was a video I saw posted somewhere by what looks to be a semi. And afterall, this road was made for ore carriers. I thought about attempting it with my 25 in tow behind my F150. But don't think my wife would have appreciated it, and wasn't sure I trusted the trailer ball. lol All though some launch ramps seem that steep. Anyway, it was a scenic drive on up to the turnoff just before Blanding, and then the road from there into the turn off to Halls. No park staff on duty when we came in on a Tuesday or out on a Thursday, to show my pass to or inspect the boat. Take pictures if you haul up that way and let us know how it was. To be honest, I also thought about towing out the Apache trail one time as well, but decided against it. lol. (The road from Canyon Lake past Apache Lake to Roosevelt Lake.) Maybe when I was younger... Colby
