Lemon refrigerator help

So I bought this expensive ($2K) GE refrigerator from Lowe's less than 2 years ago and have been having chronic problems with the bottom freezer cycling to cause the ice to melt in the ice dispenser, water overflows, freezes again and keeps the door from closing properly, which results in heavy frost. The fridge is a stainless steel unit with two top doors and a sliding bottom unit.

It is out of warranty, so I called Sears and they fixed it, but when I called Sears back several times under their 90 day service warranty about the cycling (no frost, though) they came out again and finally told me if I called them again they would have to charge me for a new service call.

Does anyone have any ideas about how I might get satisfaction on this from Lowe's or GE? I think it is a fundamental design flaw or manufacturing defect.

Thanks!

Time to write some letters/e-mails to GE, Lowes and Sears. Don't have any specific info, but I wish you luck and perseverance in this endeavor. Perhaps the BBB could be of service for specifics/addresses etc? Just a thought. $2K for a fridg is quite a bit of $$$$ to me.

How about calling "Jesse Jones, King 5 News"? He seems to solve a lot of consumer problems.

Great idea! I will do that, but first I think I need to give Lowe's and GE a chance to respond. I am looking for the best way to approach each company other than writing a letter to the CEO.

It's out of warranty. What would you consider "satisfaction" from Lowe's or GE? If Sears "fixed it", then this cycling seems like a different problem. If that's the case, then just pay for the service call. If you think it's a design flaw and you want to pursure it, do some research and see if others have the same complaint. Good luck.

I didn't like the idea of paying that much for a fridge either but there were "other factors" involved.

I was hoping there was something equivalent to the automobile lemon laws that I could use, but since my last post I have done some research and found that (a) a lot of people have problems with high-end GE refrigerators and (b) both GE and Lowe's tell them go go pound sand.

So I guess I am stuck with getting it fixed on a regular basis...

Is it overloaded or air flow being blocked or reduced by stored items from other factors?

We had issues with items blocking airflow in the back of the shelves.
We were forced to eat some Schwan's ice cream to reduce items being stored.
Apparently freezers need good air circulation to function properly.

If anyone needs technical assistance in unclogging the Schwan Ice Cream from their freezer, by all means call me.....one thing I can do extremely well and it won't cost you near as much as the Sears Repairman! :wink

Try repair forum like

We had issues with stove from Home Depot and they do not carry oven heating elements and sent me to some parts store after saying Ace Hdwe doesnt carry them. Parts store was closing and not helpful so went to AC and got a close match (slightly smaller) but the Admiral was able to bake some pies and I hand dipped the Schwan's. Their Xmas ice cream cake is on its way

Better stay away from the ice cream for a bit, the docs might be watching you. I caught one of my patients in a chinese place one day after I just finished telling him no more chinese food. I was only there to test the food, not really to eat it, guess I did not buy that story either.

That reminds me, we once thought we should install a grate near the back of the fridge to promote air circulation back there. It is set into an alcove in the cabinets and fills it up pretty well. OTOH, I've seen many other fridges snuggled between cabinets with no ill effects, so I am not sure that is something worth pursuing.
