Marinas, 1000 Islands, New York

Anyone have a recommendation for a marina in the vicinity of Clayton in the 1,000 Islands, New York? Ports Cruising Guide for this area lists several but it it is always nice to have a report of first hand information before making reservations for a transient dock. We are planning on being there the second week of August.

Thank you fellow Brats for your help

Best regards,

I have stayed at Millens Bay Marina off and on since the early 90s. My wife and I were there August 2009. They have cottages and stationary house boats for rent. Docks are new and they have a gas pump. They also have a good ramp. The marina is approx. a 15 minute drive (by Car) to Clayton. They are 20 minutes by boat to Lake Ontario. The little bay they are located in is very well protected.

Thank you for your replies. The marinas I have contacted have not returned phone calls or emails. I guess they mut have more business than they can handle.

Best regards,
Rollie

Rollie, It would be worthwhile to post that information (that they do not return emails or phone calls) to Active Captain. Word may eventually get back to the marinas in question and in the meantime other cruisers will be aware of your experiences.

Warren,
I may just do that. I have yet to receive a call back or email response for any marina I contacted. I may just call my trip off if this is indicative of how they do business in this area.

Hi,
Try going online at www.marinas.com. That site gives aerial photos of the actual marinas. I have a Skippper Bob book Cruising Lake Ontario 2009 edition that covers the Lake Ontario, and Clayton, Alexander bay area and Candian side o the 1000 Islands . If you pm me with your address you are welcome to have as long as you return it when you are done with it. People speak well of the facilities at Keewaydin State Park marina which has 100 slips about 1.2 miles west of Aexandria Bay. Alexandria Bay has town docks and they offer quick and easy access to town they offer free daytime use and reasonable over night rates. . Clayton has a wooden boat museum which unbelievable and should not be missed. They say wakes can be a problem staying Clayton. You can't miss Boldt Castle. Have a great time it is truly beautiful up there.

We stayed at the Islander marina several years ago when it was new, and we have also stayed at the municipal dock next door. Wakes were not a problem at the marina, and are only a problem at the municipal dock if you are on the outside of the wall. Both locations are right next to the Antique Boat Museum (fabulous!) and an easy walk to the town center. Clayton is a very nice small river town, much nicer than Alexandria Bay, which is way too commercial for us. It also has a restored opera house which now has an interesting series of events during the season. I can readily recommend either the marina or the municipal dock, but you will need reservations until after Labor Day. I'm surprised they do not return your calls. Keep trying - they are worth it.

Keewaydin has safe slips and very good facilities, but it is a State Park and a long walk from Alexandria Bay, or anywhere else for that matter. I was there a month ago to have the Cosmic C pulled out for service (the only Honda dealer in the area is off the water!) and all slips were occupied.

There are several marinas in and around Alexandria Bay, and hotels like the Edgewood resort have big docks for guests, but for us A Bay is a place to visit, not stay.

Don't give up your trip. There are so many things to see in the Thousand Islands

I know you said no one is returning your phone calls, just curious, is Millens Bay Marina one of them?

Thanks
Dave

Fellow Brats,

Thank you all for taking the time and responding to my forum request. All were good suggestions and each reply helped. Today, I finally was able to get confirmed reservations at the Islander Marina in Clayton. With this behind us, we are now looking forward to our visit to this area. After a trip out to Lake Ontario, I will able to say that C-Batical's bottom has been wet in all of the Great Lakes.

Dave - Millen's Bay Marina & Cottages was not one on the marinas who left me hanging. It looks like a friendly and clean spot; maybe next time.
Thanks for your interest and recommendation.

Best regards,
Rollie/C-Batical
