Modifying routes with Garmin PC software?

When using Garmin MapSource software, what's the quickest way to modify an existing route? I need to do this, for example, when I zoom in and realize that I've routed myself over an obstruction somewhere in the middle of the route.

Right now, if I want to modify a portion of a route, I create a "mini" route, copy and paste its points into the right place on the "big" route, delete the points on the big route that no longer make sense, and finally delete the mini route to keep my route list trimmed. Trust me, it's as cumbersome to do as it is to describe.

Is there a way to just drag portions of the route around with the cursor or some other slick way of moving the route line around without using the aforementioned cut 'n paste method?

I've struggled with this myself. Garmin software allows us to delete waypoints and add waypoints, but I don't see a provision that would allow us to drag a waypoint to a new position.

What, no Photoshop insertion of my likeness? Are you busy today or something, Joe? :lol: Am not at home at the moment, but will fire up MapSource and see what the deal is. I KNOW there are a lot of folks out there who use it, maybe somebody else can answer off the top of their head...I am now so used to both Coastal Explorer and Raytech Planner, which let you just zoom in and drag waypoints around, that I frankly don't remember how MapSource works, although I still have it on my hard drive, and I remember that I used to think is was pretty dang slick.

The answer is yes you can click and drag the route line at any point you find a reason to avoid something.

Click on your selection tool (Arrow) and then click one time on your route line at the point you wish to move. The route line will light up with a thin black line in the center of it and without clicking anything move the mouse to the side and the route line will follow. Click again anywhere in the route line and do it again if needed. A waypoint will be created and numbered when you do this.

The screen capture below started out as a straight line route. Play with it...and you will get the hang of it pretty quick.

I Just tried your trick and it works! This is most helpful; I planned a bunch of routes before purchasing the BlueChart CD and now, with its detail, I've discovered just how many things can get in the way of an otherwise perfectly useful straight course.

Yeah, Mike beat me to it - and here is the MapSource Help entry on moving a waypoint on the graphic map, more often than not what I need to do is simply move a few of the waypoints I have already created after I zoom in and find I am going through rocks or something:


To Move a Waypoint on the Graphic Map:

1. Choose Selection from the Tools Menu or click on the icon.
2. Right-click the mouse on the desired waypoint and select ‘Move Waypoint,’ or click the left mouse button on the waypoint to select it (the waypoint will be highlighted in yellow), then click on it again. Do not double click the waypoint, as this will display the Waypoint Properties.
3. The mouse pointer will now have the word “MOVE” and a small icon of the Waypoint Tool below it. Move the mouse pointer to the new location and click the left mouse button to anchor the waypoint. You may also right-click the mouse pointer at the new location and select ‘Place Waypoint Here’ to anchor the waypoint, or select ‘Cancel’ to return the waypoint to its original location.
