Moosehead Lake moose hunt

Hi All,

Rick from Maine (Hunky Dory) and I (Crescent Girl) have tentatively decided to get together on Moosehead Lake in Maine from August 14th through the 18th for a mini New England gathering. Moosehead is the largest lake in New England, deep in the Maine woods, and is still one of the last really wild places left where you can see moose, deer, loons and all kinds of wildlife, and be totally isolated if you want to be. There are also all the facilities you need at the southern end of the lake (Greenville) and some marvelous fishing in deep, crystal clear and cold waters. It's about 4 1/2 to 5 hours from the Maine border and should be an ideal environment for a C-Dory.

There's a great state campground, Lily Bay State Park on the East side of the lake with two ramps and docks for boats near your campsite. There are also state ramps in Greenville and Rockwood, and motels with docks where you can tie up. The area really caters to fishermen and hunters. In summer, the facilities fill up fast so you probably need reservations soon.

If any one would like to join us to go Moose Hunting (pictures only) we would love the company.

Sounds good -- we're thinking about it. What about an October fall color trip to Moosehead? -- does the lake have the right kind of trees for good color? Want to go both August and October? Where would you plan to launch? ... at the State Park? Hmmmmm.
 
I have reservations at Lily Bay State Park for Aug 14-18. There are only a few sites left for that week. Go to their web site to sign up. Rick and Carol may stay in town(Greenville), and there is a good ramp there. I don't know if it is ok to anchor on the lake, but if t is, we want to do that. A call to the Chamber of Commerce should provide an answer.

Unfortunately, We can't do both Aug and Oct. I have to work sometime... :|

Any thoughts on where best to launch and stay on the Erie?

Wow -- never thought about not being able to anchor out in Moosehead Lake! At least, not until reading about New Hampshire's 'Live Free or Die' no anchoring policy for their lakes. A large 'wilderness' lake without anchoring? -- seems improbable, but glad you are checking it out.

If we get over to Moosehead, and there is a Gathering of folks, we'd enjoy being tied up for the Gathering but would then want to explore the lake (either before or after) the Gathering, and would like to be on anchor for the cruising.
 
We'll be there. Hope to see as many Moose as we saw in AK in the last 2 weeks!

We're going to be staying there from 8/14 to 8/16. We'll be tying up at the Chalet Moosehead Lakefront Motel in Greenville Jct.

Looking forward to seeing the Usual Suspects at another Norteast C-Dory gathering.

I just spoke with Maine Inland Fisheries, and the officer said it was OK to anchor in Moosehead lake if you are "so many feet off shore", but she didn't know what that number was. :crook . I get the feeling that the lake is so remote, nobody is going to check, and nobody cares. :wink . I think we're OK!

Also, you can get a Delorme map of Moosehead at the local Hunting and fishing store as you come into Greenville. I'm told it shows depths.
 
So -- can't play hooky and have an October fall color trip to Moosehead, eh Dun? Sure would like to join with you folks in August, but looks like too tight a schedule for us to make it, since we'll be returning from WY about then. Have a great time, take good notes and pictures, and we can hear your tales when on the Erie together -- and perhaps we'll follow in your Moosehead wakes come October.
 
Well, October is very tempting...we'll see how the fall goes. We have family gathering in Maine in August so we'll be up there anyway, and hence the side trip to Moosehead which is only two hours from Trenton. Dave and Valerie (Widget) will also be there, so we now have three boats. Sorry you can't make it but we'll see you in Sept.

BTW, any hints on launching and parking on the Erie?

Remember, our place in Trenton is yours whenever you need it. Maybe you can use it as a base in October. Have fun in the mountains!

We've had to cancel the August Moosehead Lake trip due to complications at work, and home. We'd still like to do it, and Rick and I have discussed early October in the hopes that others can also join us to view the Fall foliage, which should be spectacular around Oct 5th or so. Any others out there intersted?

MY, my! Do bring plenty of "longjohns" if Long Lake & Sabago Lake are any indication of the cool nights & snow you will probably encounter.

My visits to my family in the Naples, ME region has given us a view of snow each year since when, during the first 2 wks of Oct. We have retraced our honeymoon treck of some 41 years ago back to this area.

Hi Art,

Why don't you come and join us? A little snow and cold weather is par for the course for New England in Oct. The colors will be beautiful and there will be no black flies, that's for sure! Long johns are the dress code in Mooseheed country anyway. Maybe we'll see some Moose.

Sounds like a delightful idea...IF, I only had the time... Not retired, yet. The broadcasting TV business is paying my bills.

I do remember those wonderful black flies that ate us alive on the top of MT Washington (NH) some years back during a July 4th week and the 'no-see-ums' that left quarter size welts on me at Moose Head Lake. I found out what that 'black cloud' was that moved without any wind across the lake. I bet those critters, that only live 24hrs, save up a whole years supply of 'juice' for that one bite.

The deer flies on the lower tip of Virginia's Eastern Shore are as bad, but they seem to have the ability to carry off the deer for their own banquet.

Oh, we don't need the long johns here.

Meanwhile, why don't you go read the "A plan forming" thread - I think you just MAY have a part to play in this program, if you plan far enough ahead (hint: start planning NOW)!

Yeah, that ramp looks good and I think the group will use Seneca Lake State Park.

We stayed in a campground in Sturbridge years ago but I'll have to look up the name in our log. Nice, but near the highway. It's fine for just overnight. I'd offer to have you use our driveway, but we're in the middle of major renovations and there's no room at all right now.

You are, however, most welcome to stay at our place in Trenton, Maine on your way to the Cat ferry in Bar Harbor. It's only about 15 miles from the Ferry (30 mins) and there's outside power if you need it. Stay for one or more days. Email me directly if you're interested.

To keep this topical, any chance of you coming to Moosehead in October? You can even leave the boat home and hitch day rides with us. The campground at Lily Bay State Park is wonderful.

We stayed at Yogi Bear's Jellystone park in Sturbridge. If I remember right, it was one dark and stormy night, on the way home from the Cape, and we were late and didn't feel like driving the last two hours. It was fine for that!

I hope you will be stayting in some Nova Scotia provincial parks. In our experience, the Canadian Provincial parks are marvelous!

Thanks for the info on camping in Sturbridge. And thanks for the Trenton offer. We have not yet settled on the route we will take.

We will certainly think about camping at Moosehead Lake on our return if you are still there. Among other things, it depends upon the timing.
