Mounting Magma Kettle BBQ?

OK, the kids got us a Magma Kettle Gas BBQ for the boat. It says "mounting hardware sold separately." I know somebody else must have one of these kettle jobbies, what seems to be the preferred way to mount on a CD22? NOT going to mount it on the rail on the pulpit! We have a Scotty downrigger hump (for the crab davit actually), no rod holder sockets intalled, but that could be an option...What do people feel works best?
 
Great question because I got one for christmass from a friend of mine. I have not decided where or how to mount it. I have seen several mounted over the splash well. I am not sure of that location because worse case , the gas is right under there. I want mine to hang out over the side of the boat. you know just in case. hey were both irish, if it was not for bad luck we would have no luck at all.
 
I stuck a rod holder mount square in the middle on the cockpit side of the splashwell. The Magma is usually then hung out over the splashwell or, if it were raining, it could be swung inboard under the top canvas. Unless you have a mega-gasoline leak (in which case you got other problems), I would think one would be well below the lower explosive limit and proximity to the gas tanks should not be a problem. Given that I'm still here to write this, at least that has been my experience. The centrally mounted position is most convenient and maximizes the amount of wind screen protection provided by the cabin, which in cold weather is of some advantage.

I have a bracket mounted so the kettle hangs over the side too but mine is aft and I keep thinking about mounting one up forward though. The main reason for another location is not the fuel tank but the fuel vent. Seems as though mine hangs right over the port vent which on our boat is also rather high on the side.

I did mount an additional holder bracket down low inside the gunnel so that I can have a place to store and bungee off while under way. It sits nicely tucked in the corner and out of the way. The other reason mine sits to port is that we have the old stile lazaret covers with nothing on the port side so I have a small refillable bottle that fits in with the drain to the compartment going overboard. Don't have very good pictures in the album so I can't send you there for a better look. Maybe I'll get a chance to set it up and take a few shots.

Mount it over the side to avoid getting the grill drippings on your boat.

If and when you do reach that explosive limit, it would be nice if you'd let us know how that feels. And what is does to the meat on your grill. :cry

This is an old thread, but it looks like the right place to mention my solution, which I've written about at Navagear.

Ours is a compromise. Both positions use rod holders. My preferred is the one along side (port side) aft cabin wall, just forward of teh water fill. It puts the BBQ out over the water, but admittedly is not the most convenient to reach. The cookspreferredd position is in the portside rod holder mounted on teh rearcockpitt rail,puttingg the BBQ over teh portsidelazarettee, and above and aft slightly of the gas fill. the tank vent is over the side and forward a foot or so. I put a wet towel over tehlazarettee and cover it with tinfoil to catch anything hot. I'm still here so far, but I have to say I have reservations about this placement. It is more convenient to use there. I'll try and post a photo here, if it doesn't work it is on the front page of our photo album, showing the flag, cooler and BBQ.

Pat, on the old Captain's Choice, I had mine mounted on a lazarette top, it was just a little surface mounted socket, about 1 1/2" diameter at the base with a little hole that the rod mounted in. There's a pin that keeps it from coming out but lets it swivel. That way, you can bring it inboard to light it and check the cooking and swing it over the side to cook/drip, etc.

Hi Pat,

We don't have the kettle model, but our BBQ is mounted on a flush mount rod holder that is located a safe distance forward of the fuel filler on the port side of the boat. The insert for the rod holder has a uni-ball type head that allows the BBQ to swivel and tilt in the direction of choice. I set ours so the gas cylinder is on the overboard side.

I do have to pull the port side window covering off the camper back when using it, but that isn't too big a deal. Probably my biggest complaint is that you have the mount under the BBQ when it is out of the flush mount. One of my projects this winter is to make a small cradle for it so I can store the BBQ under the splash well. I do not like to travel with it mounted.

I mounted mine like Joe did, over the motorwell....and it works just fine... but my main gripe is that it is too hot...and burns everything....
Roger on Fishtales found a neat plate that sits on the burner and defuses the flame....seems to help allot....
My son offered to give me one of those Rectangular West Marine units...and I may do that...I really, really hate to ruin a good steak with that flame thrower....

I bought this at the International Sportsman Show in Pamona several years ago. I love the way it cooks and I put water, juice or beer in the ring for steaming. I place the meat right on the grill surface.

I seem to remember that you bought one at Boaters World in Channel Islands last year.
They had them at the store "free" with purchase of some other cooker. I think they sold it for $20? They were in a plain brown box on the shelf behind the cooker.
I also saw a few of them at BW in Santa Barbara.
I did not see them in the catalog.

When I use mine, it is mounted on the pulpit rail. I sit on the bow while the grill is in use. When I am finished I hand the food through the center window and shut the grill off to cool. I dismount it and store it under the aft seat.

I want as much distance as possible between a grill flame and 40 gallons of gas!
