my hull numbers are no longer attached. How do I replace?

I noticed that my hull ID number is missing from both the transom and under the front brow. I do not know if this was an attempted thief or bad glue. In any case they are both gone. I called C-Dory last year, or so, and they said have some new ones made. That was not all that helpful as I have no idea how to do that. I begged for help, offered to pay etc. But they were not interested in my 2003 C-Dory problems at that time.

I bought this boat new in 2003. I have all the original paper work. Now I want to sell the boat. Naturally people will be suspicious, as they should be.

Is there a third place where the hull ID number might be? Does anyone have a clue how to solve this?

BTW, my hull ID# is CDO228H203
 
Dunno about a third spot. Usually you are advised to have the HIN inscribed into permanent parts of the boat, and one of the locations should be hidden and only known to the owner.

You might call your state's Marine Board, or whatever agency monitors boat registrations. In OR, the Marine Board has a good web site for stuff like this.
 
Your hull number should be stamped into the upper starboard corner of your transom.

My numbers are also stamped and hidden in my cockpit port side lazerette.
Have a look, you might get lucky.

Most of the C Dory had the HIN embossed in the transom right upper starboard. A 2003 should be in the fiberglass there, not on a plaque. The second HIN on a 2003 should be epoxied aluminum plate up under the eyebrow of the forward cabin outside.

You only have 10 digits in the HIN--there should be 12, and some C Dorys have 13. You are missing the Hull number--such as 49…you have CDO as the builder. and the length. The boat was started August of 2002 and is a 2003 model. The HIN should be on the paper work you received when you bought the boat. Also it is on most state registrations.

It is legal to use an aluminum plate riveted and epoxied in place in the right upper quadrant of the transom, with at least 1/4" high letters and numbers. However, you must have the complete HIN--not a partial. Look at that transom again, and double check. You should have two other digits on either side of the 8, or before the 8.
 
I have a 2002 22' Cruiser, and both of the HIN's (upper right transom and up above the center window) are on engraved silver/metal plates that are set into depressions molded into the gelcoat. There is nothing about this that looks to have been changed from the original build.

Based on this (if yours were the same), and the fact that you are doing nothing wrong (you own the boat, have the HIN, etc.), then if it were me I would have two new plates engraved with the HIN and bond them to the boat in the original depressions with an adhesive that is not likely to let loose. I would think that someplace that does things like make trophies and other engraved items could do it for you. Try to specify a metal/alloy that is suitable for the marine environment.

PS: I agree with Thataway that something is missing in the HIN you listed. Perhaps just an oversight. Here is what I see:

CDO = builder code, this looks fine.
22 = size, this looks fine.
8.... Two digits are missing here. This should be the hull number and should be three digits. If it is hull number "8," then it should be "008" in the HIN. Maybe that is what it is and you simply shortened it to the plain 8.
H2 = Build started in August of 2002 (this is not uncommon; to have the build start in the previous year).
03 = Boat is a 2003 model year
 
He did not give a correct HIN in his post.

Better than an engraver at a trophy shop, just any machine shop which has the metal stamps with numbers and letters--be much cheaper. But have to be at least 1/4" high.
 
My upper starboard transom has an indentation and some residual glue from what was the location of the hull # plate. I looked inside all the cabinets for a third hull ID # location, and nothing there. As I mentioned earlier the plate above the windshield under the brow is also gone. Though the glue and recessed area remains. Again I wonder if somebody was going to steal it at some point. It does have two honda 40's and is located in The Florida Keys. Boats with more than one engine are favored for transporting Cuban's and others into the US. They are stolen regularly in our area.

I was incorrect about the hull number as posted. I have to pay more attention to my typing, or maybe clean my glasses.

My hull# is CDO22084H203.

The machine shop idea is my next step. Thank you all for the help.
 
I had a nice simple stainless plate engraved by a trophy shop for less than 20 bucks when I needed one for a previous boat. A little epoxy and good as new.
