Need to change drain plug.

The drain plug on my 2004 22 Cruiser has developed a very slow leak. It was installed from the inside. I leave my boat in the water most of the time and would like to know if there is a way to change it without pulling clear out. I did a search and found a discussion and someone mentioned that if you take it out and go up on plane...water won't come in when you pull the plug so you can change it. I don't want to do anything risky so though I would ask here. Thanks in advance for your help.

Dennis,

I would think that a piece of heavy tape, like duct tape applied on the outside over the transom hole would hold off any intruding water while quickly changing the plug.
 
I agree with Roger. I would have a new plug in hand, lightly lubricated, make sure the drain hole is clean and put the new one in. By the way, I have a spare plug velcroed next to the drain so I have a good plug available in an emergency.

Hi Dennis, I know that the above method will work, but I suppose you'd be in a bit of a fix if for some reason you couldn't get the plug back in. Like Colobear, I keep a spare plug on a short line secured near the drain.
 
I have done the pull the plug on plane and it worked well. Just don't do it by your self :wink:

another way is to cover the hole from the out side( or not) and just pull the plug with one hand, scrub the thru hull with a battery brush with the other while water comes in and then install with new plug. 10 to 20 second maybe a half gallon of water at most. turn on the pumps before you start and use a large sponge after wards to finish off any drops. should work fine. the amount and pressure of water coming in is not very great. I have pulled the plug just to clean the deck off after fishing in the 22. Just don't tell my wife I did it ok :wink:
 
When I was a kid in GA we had large Jon boats for fishing. They would get a lot of water in them during a rain storm and in those days it rained a lot down south. To drain the water out we would just get on plane, pull the plug and it was like a vacuum sucking the water out. Not even a drop came back in the drain hole, it was like there was a shop vac sucking out the water. We would stick the plug back in and go back to fishing.

Of course those were also the days we had no seat belts, never wore a life vest and lit our charcoal grills with gasoline.

It's a wonder we all lived through childhood!! And even young adulthood.. :shock:

10 year olds rule of war. No bb gun shots closer then 10 yard and no more then 5 bumps. cheaters will be stood against a wall and pelted with rocks or walnuts. I miss my youth.
 
As a young adult I installed a transmission by having it placed on my chest, being slide on a roller under a car and bench pressing it into place while other set the bolts in. I was stronger then.
