New Ads on Home page

I hope the new ad section above the tip jar on the home page brings in some extra revenue and that it's needed 'cause the big ad in that location is a bit annoying. The one at the top right was non-intrusive. I can live with it because of this great site in any case. I usually stop there only to look at all the posts since I was last there and now have to scroll down a lot more on it to look at any new pictures!

The new ads don't bother me. I am amazed at how I can look at something and then ads for it pop up on other sites. Then I do the same thing as when there are ads on TV: if it interests me, I'll look; if not, back to the C-Brats. 8)

As long as I can find my way around this site, it's all good. :D

Best wishes,
Jim

Jim, I agree it's all good! But, someone "moved my cheese"! :?

As for the ads popping up, I'm sure you know what cookies do (not the girl scout type) and what Google (and others) is doing with our information. It can be quite insidious.

I had not noticed the new ads until mentioned. The top one when I first looked was for a 150 ton Crane with a 190 foot boom to "lift your boat"!

Then the next two were for boats which would compete with the C Dory line (sort of....)

A bit humorous--and I just ignore these type of ads!

I use the Firefox browser with Adblock plus enabled and I do not see any ads, just a small window that says 'Ads'.

I turned the blocker off to see what was there, none of the ads were of any interest to me. I sure don't want to buy a Sea Ray!

The blocker is back on and the ads are gone.

I auto login to the new posts and dont routinely view the main page. Today, the ad was for Memory Suppliers who I contacted for some custom made USB drives. Interesting coincidence

Ah, change...isn't it wonderful?

Yes, we're attempting to increase revenue. Site income is not huge by any means, but it's down 50% from a year ago due to lost advertisers up top. It still covers the bills, but I've had to accept that C-Brats income will not be able to fund my new retirement Tomcat. That's right...I've come to the troubling conclusion, that I'll likely have to go with a used one.

First up - the front page location was chosen after quite a bit of consideration. The front page gets a ton of exposure, as our stats show virtually everyone hits it first. So, it's the ideal place for a big, bold ad that virtually everyone will notice. Advertisers obviously love this, and pay accordingly.

From our users' standpoint though, this location is comparatively non-intrusive. While most everyone lands on the home page initially, they quickly move off into the forums and/or photo albums, where things get back to "normal" - only the ads up top.

While the front page ad is currently being fed via Google Adsense, our plans are to market this spot directly to boating advertisers as we've done up top. As with the ads up top, we'll have a very limited number of slots available - so if we sell them out to direct advertisers, the Google ads will be completely replaced in that area. Speaking of which - yes, I'm aware an occasional ad for questionable sites slips through...I'll be fining tuning things such that certain categories don't get served up.

RE the front page ads pushing down the "Recent Photos" links from where it was before - you have two options, both of which have already been mentioned. Scroll down, or install an ad blocker.

That's right...I'm not about to discourage the use of browser ad blockers around here, as I use them myself. That being said - I do make use of my ad blocker's ability to whitelist specific sites, allowing ads wherever I choose to see them. Some sites show targeted ads I'm interested in, so they get allowed. Other sites provide great info for free, and don't inundate me with tons of flashy annoyances - so I've no problem allowing the operators to make a few $$ for their efforts.

Any other comments/complaints, feel free to air them here.

Bill,

Does the site receive revenue if the ad just appears, or only when someone clicks on the ad?

Does the use of an ad blocker prevent the site from from receiving revenue?

Well, if it's worth something to me not to have ads, but the ads help keep this boat afloat, I figured I should install adblock and then make a donation to our favorite administrator's retirement fund. :D

Our direct advertisers pay a flat rate, so they are unaffected by users' decisions to block or click their ads.

Google pays per click - but encouraging anyone to do so will get our Google account cancelled in a heartbeat. And, when Google decides to cancel your Adsense account - everything sitting in your account at that point is forfeited as well. So, if anyone is thinking they are doing us a favor by routinely clicking on Google Ads they have no interest in - the opposite is true.

So, the short version - everyone is best served doing whatever they are comfortable with. If you want to block ads - great, have at it. If not - don't install adblockers, or whitelist the sites you want them to display on.

There is a version of Adblock Plus for Chrome, yes. It was the solution to blocking s7.addthis.com, which was preventing me from loading the weather map mentioned in another thread.

I wanted to let my fellow Brats know how one of the new advertisers really came through for me and my family, but waited until now to post just to make sure all the credit card charges came through AOK. Like President Reagan said, "Trust with verification".

Anyway, our son just finished up his Junior year at the University of Illinois. This semester, he studied abroad in Verona, Italy. My wife, daughter, and daughter's boyfriend all went over to Italy to visit him in April. We wanted to shoot up to London and stay for a few days on the way back as the return flight required a stop there anyway. All the travel arrangements were relatively easy to put together, but staying in London was pretty hard at any sort of reasonable cost. The Queen's Jubilee and the upcoming Olympics were already driving costs up.

We were just a few days away from leaving, and I was getting exasperated trying to put something together. Looking for a break, I clicked over to our favorite website to see what you guys were up to, and the first thing I see is an ad for onefinestay.com. Almost divine intervention. I contacted those folks, and they put together a GREAT place/deal for us. A two bedroom/two bath flat in London (Maida Vale) with a kitchen, living room, dining room, a washer/dryer...the whole schebang. The website is a property management firm in London that arranges short term stays in London residents' homes. They even give you a Vodaphone iPhone to use while you're there. Costs were way reasonable for a lot of quality space. Unheard of in London unless you pay up big time.

Our place was owned by a makeup designer...she had two BAFTA awards on her mantel (the British Academy Award), and had pictures of her working with Scarlett Johansson, Woody Allen, Leonardo DeCaprio, etc. Pretty wild!

C-Dorys and C-Brats are magic...good mojo!
