New owner needs a boat hook for CD 25

I am in the process of order things on the West Marine Web site. Do any CD 25 owners have a favorite boat hook they recommend for a newbie? A certain fixed length or is a telescopic pole better?
 
Telescopic. I have two--one is the twist to lock--and it is about 8 feet long. The second is the push button, and has push button end attatchements, which will allow brush, boat hook, happy hooker, etc on t, he end.

The twist to lock is faster to use, the button lock is more versitile. There are times when two boat hooks are good--like some of the narrow slot canyons of lake Powell...

I have the twist-lock poles on two boats and they're pretty good, but I think the pin/hole type would be longer lived. The twist-lock ones do experience wear and get loose or sticky with age, and can be fouled by dirt and sand.

Store it where you're going to use it in a convenient location to grab in a hurry. It's not too convenient on top of the flying bridge!

One can keep the twist lock poles clean and lubricated and they can continue to be used for quite some time. I have two--one on my 18 footer I have owned about 20 years.

What do you lube the mechanism with?

(I've got part of the translucent vinyl sticking out of the sliding mechanism.)

I find the paddle and boat hook combination to be handy. Since it is two tools in one it saves space. I know. You won't paddle a 25 far. Sometimes you find yourself a-drift just a few feet from a dock or another boat. A few strokes can usually swing the stern right over. And the boat hook is well, like any other telescoping boat hook.

I also have a double telescoping pole, about 12 ft. I mounted mine vertically along the right side of the rear door (as you're exiting). I use it alot, easy to get to from the outside too.
 
I use a pole made by Rich-Mar, it uses pushbuttons and is 12' when extended. It has many attachments available, I also made an atachment for a harpoon and gaff to reduce clutter in the boat. It works well for fending off sea lions when they think your boat is a refuge from killer whales, a noisey and generally unpleasent occurance.
