New tires for my tow rig

I have a 2002 Dodge 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 with the Cummins diesel. After towing the Lori Ann to Lake Powell from the PNW I am ready to switch my current 305/70R17 M+S Goodyear Wranglers to a smaller tire with an all-season tread. In the past I have had good luck with Michelins for this application. I would be interested in recommendations for other tires to consider.

Thanks,
Warren

OUCH!! Sounds like we have a GM guy among us.

Warren, I have the same truck with Goodyear Wranglers, but they are 265/R75 16's, and they seem to work fine. I travel with about 2800 pounds of camper on them and pull the C-Dory as well, with no problem. I will not claim however than I don't know all that weight is there, and height, especially when you test the clearance of the street trees in Cathlamet.

How come you want smaller tires, just curious.

We are running Firestone Steel Tex R 45's. LT 265/75/R16 120R, Load Range E (3415 lbs rated load per tire at 80 #)--seem smooth riding with good tread on a Ford Excursion 7.3 diesel. I am probably running less weight that some.

I had a lot of problems on the tow to Lake Powell from Anacortes, which I discussed at length with Brent and Jim (Discovery and Wild Blue). The consensus is that I need to get the trailer balanced better so that it has the correct weight on the tongue. They also felt that I would have a better ride if I went back to stock size tires. I am willing to give it a try and keep the big tires for when I need something more aggressive. I should also get better gas mileage with street tires.

I sent a PM to Warren, and then decided I might share the thought. The TC and CD boats have both a higher windage profile and sit higher on the trailer than many boats. Typically boats are 5% to 7% tongue weight. I tend to run 10%, beccause of this higher windage, which is more like travel trailers. Considquently my boats seem to track very well. Wonder what others are running as tongue weights?
