New Wireless Router is Awesome!

OK, so we have been living in the wireless router "Dark Ages" with our Netgear 11.b router...but recently it seemed not to be working well at all...soooo, ordered a new Belkin N1 router. It has everything from 11.b to 11.n1 (draft) and of course all the standards inbetween. I am probably connected at 11.g through the MacBook, I really don't know. BUT it is SO much snappier! Highly recommended, if you too are living in the Dark Ages!

What comes before "dark ages"?
 
I believe it would be "fall"; you know, spring, summer, fall, and the Dark Ages. And I think they're starting to get to me!

Hmmm...a simple observation about a new wireless router. Ahem, yes, I have a Linksys radial saw and a Netgear planer. Before the "Dark Ages" I believe was the Roman period, followed by the medieval times...but I could be mistaken about that, I just learned that from Wikipedia!
 
How timely. I just found out at work that we need to replace our " o l d wireless router, and this sounds like it's the way to go. After all, the info came from a very reliable source, (C-Brats.com) :smile. I'll check with the IT guy, since he is the one that will be doing the install.

When you talk about a wireless router, are you talking about one for the boat or elsewhere? I use Verizon for my DSL and have an Actiontec wireless router provided by them which doesn't seem to have much of a range, i.e. it is upstairs and I can hardly get a signal for the laptop downstairs. Can I buy an aftermarker router, do I have to stick with theirs, can I extend the range with a different antenna, etc.?

And, I want to secure my portal so every passing person with a laptop can't get in. I think I have WEP and understand it is next to useless. I want to use a better gatekeeper any suggestions about how to do that?

Barry - Here is the link to the Belkin N1 wireless router at buy.com. This will give you the range, speed and security you want. That said, wireless routers start at under $20...there are a lot of them around $50. But this is a great one, and we love it. You do initial set up from a CD, very easy. Then you use your browser to access the router internal pages to set up the security, I think there are about 4 or 5 different flavors, starting with 64 bit WEP. You can use any router with any DSL or cable modem as far as I know - you just plug the cable from the modem into the appropriate jack on the back of the router, plug in a wired computer to set it up, and you should be good. It took less than five minutes to get it going.
