NMEA 2000, New Honda BF90

I’m just beginning to research what I need to connect a new Honda BF90 with the Garmin GPSMAP 740S. I looked at the GPSstore just long enough to get confused. Any tips on what component I need? I assume it is just plug and play at both the motor and chart plotter? Thanks in advance, Ken

I did just replace the combination tachometer/ hour meter.
 
You need to setup a nmea 2000 network. There will tees with terminating resistors at each end of the cable and then tees for each device to connect to the backbone. there will be one tee that supplys power to the network. The best thing to do is go to youtube and watch a few videos to see how it is done.
 
Ken, I’m just finishing up with installing a nmea 2000 network, the difference being, I have a regular nmea 2000 network combined with Raymarine instead of your Garmin. I did as Jody suggest, looked at videos & Google searches of how to. I was combining the twin motors nmea 2000 with new gauges, auto pilot & chart plotter. Hopefully more simple for you. This is the Honda part number for the 19.5 foot nmea 2000 cable from the motor to the nmea 2000 network. 06653-ZZ3-760HE it comes with one nmea 2000 T connector.

I went with the HD-4 gauge.
 
Here's a good image of what it looks like. However this one doesn't show a motor. So you would just add a tee for the motor.

Thank you for the replies Jay and Jody. It appears between the starter kit and the Honda supply cable it would run about $180. If I understand it correctly, this would provide the following basic engine data to my Garmin chart plotter: RPM, Voltage, Alarm-Check engine, Alarm-low voltage, engine hours, engine temp, neutral transmission indicator and fuel flow. I think fuel flow would be the most valuable data in order to maximize efficiency under way. For most of this data I already have an analog gauge or the existing Honda alarm or dummy light on the control station. I don’t think I would really use the added fuel management sensor but maybe in the future. I also don’t have autopilot. Am I missing something? I’m starting to think maybe I don’t really need it. Appreciate your thoughts again. Ken
 
The diagram is only a representation of what a network looks like. Yours would only need your motor and the MFD and a power connection for the network along with the terminators. It would allow you to see all of your engine data and fuel data would come from the motor computer. Just program your MFD to display what you want to see.

When you connect your Garmin display, it will also calculate your speed over ground and MPH, MPG etc from the GPS antenna in your Garmin plotter.

You could also select a cheap $200 display to showI all that Honda engine data instead of Honda gauges, however, I predict that your Honda dealer will not like this idea one bit.
