Or maybe two... Searched the archives but can't seem to find the answers.

#1 On newer outboards is there an inter-relay that would prevent starting if the engine was left up and out of the water? On of my biggest fears is that I will forget to put the engine back down prior to starting, and destroying the impeller like I did to my father's boat nearly 50 years ago. BTW, he did make me pay for it!

#2 Have a Racor 120R fuel filter/ water separator. Has a Parker S3240TUL filter. Is it essential that I use this exact same replacement or will another 10 micron 90gph filter work?

My gut feelings are the answers are No & No.
 
The answer to the first question is no. Nope. Sorry. It's funny how those things from way back stick in the memory, but it is probably a good enough reminder that it will never, ever happen again!

As for your Racor, I cannot say for certain, but I know my smaller Racor works well with a Sierra branded element. I don't recall the part numbers I have right now, but it seems to me that Boats.net only carried the Sierra filter and to buy a genuine Racor replacement would have been harder to find and cost about twice as much. I put one of the aftermarket ones on and made sure it fit and sealed well, then ordered a spare. So far no problems.
 
I have started my Honda with it fully tilted up a couple of times. It is pretty obvious from the engine noise when this happens.

It would be pretty easy to make an interlock switch with the engine lanyard cutoff switch circuit to prevent this from happening. Then again, it is one more thing to go wrong that can prevent the engine from running.
 
In shoal water we often run the outboard trimmed up, as long as the water pickup is under water, it is fine. Many trailer the boats with outboard all of the way down...so I suppose a "defeat" switch would have to be adjustable.....

I try and stay with Parker Racor filters; The amount of saving does not seem worth it to me.
