Operating Tempature of Ranger 21

Does your 21EC have an actual temperature guage? I have the last 2006 21 built before they changed to the EC and mine does not have a guage. It only has the alarm, which is sensitive. A couple of time the water strainer became partially blocked and the alarm sounded at once. I have considered adding a guage because I have always had a concern with idiot lights and alarms only. Want to see a number even though the signal comes from the same place. Just feel when a number does not look right you check more than waiting on a signal that may not be working.

For peace of mind. Try a good quality infared/lazer thermometer. It will give an accurate reading. Find out what thermostat temperature is used. Then with the engine up to operating temp take a reading at the thermostat housing. The temp should be very close to the thermostate setting.

The same can be done with the temp alarm system. Find out what temp it should alarm and then monitor temps both before and after it alarms. You might just have a sensor that trips to early. Or might have flow troubles.

You can also take a reading at the hose inlet and outlet of the radiator (if your boat is a closed system) to get an idea of the cooling effect of the radiator. Once you get an idea of what normal readings are at variouse locations on the engine, you can then determine when cooling issues arise.
