Opinions on pricing a '92 CD 16 Angler

Hi all,
Long time no see. The last time I was out with FEMA, strangely enough, I saw few C-Dories. North Dakota would be a fine place to park one. Devil's Lake would be a fine place to fish walleyes out of one too. Grand Forks has done a beautiful job of rebuilding itself after the terrible floods of a few years ago.
On to business. After selling Snowdon a year and a half ago, I stumbled across a nice '92 CD 16 Angler with a 40 horse Mercury 2-stroke, also '92, and a good trailer. All in good shape, with a VHF and stereo AM-FM tape deck installed, all working. I will post pictures when the weather breaks enough to clean it up a little. We bought it figuring we would use it enough to justify it more than we could justify keeping Snowdon, but in the end, I gotta face reality--too many good little boats, not enough time to do them all justice in terms of sailing time. :crook So: given the above equipment list, all up and running well, what do folks think might be a reasonable asking price for this little beauty? I do notice that there seems to be more CD 16 owners on this website these days, and the boats that come on the market seem to move pretty quick it seems. Breah - looking at the more recent sales, I would say it should be priced in the $10,000 price range.

The link Marty listed above shows many 16's that sold, that were listed in the 7 to 17 thousand dollar price range. The boats 2000 and newer almost always have four stroke engines and will bring a better price. Year doesn't make much difference from the mid to late 80's to the mid to late 90's. Condition, engine and accessories are a bigger determination of the price you can get for the boat.

My advice is worth just what you paid for it.

I went through the listings for CD 16's, and noticed most sold within a month, some much faster. I also noticed that several of the lower priced ones were apparently quite underpriced, and went within hours or days of posting. Many of the listings were older hulls, with replacement engines much newer (most of which were 4-strokes).
Very informative. My 1992 CD 16 Angler is in good condition, and has a 1992 Mercury 40 hp two-stroke, with the automatic oiler presently disconnected. Engine starts and runs well. Boat seats need a good cleaning, and will possibly be replaced. Boat has factory bow rail, two rod holders, and swim step. 2001 galvanized trailer was inspected before registration last year.
I'm gonna need to interpolate between the clearly high-end boats and the lower-end offerings, I think. Somebody's gonna get a good boat, whatever we do, when it comes on the market.

Thanks. I appreciate your thoughts. I did the same thing, and reached mostly the same conclusions. Now I gotta man up and actually decide to sell yet another C-Dory. Best, Bruce

By all means, start high and come down if necessary...but to me and most potential buyers, a 2-stroke is simply an indicator that significant money needs to be spent.

The minute I see 2-stroke on a 16, I add $6-7K for a re-power to the price when wearing my buyer hat. And since we've seen several 16's with low hour 4-strokes sold for around $12K (such deals do move fast), I'd never pay more than $6-7K for a 16 with a 2-stroke.

Now...were I wearing my seller's hat like you, I'd start at $10K. Even though I personally can't see the logic in paying that much, we've seen plenty of 2-stroke equipped 16's sell in that range.
 
Okay. Thanks all for the fine advice. I'll be posting a formal ad when I can get outside to clean her off and take some good pics, but I'm gonna bite the bullet and go CD-less for a second time (drawback of working for FEMA--hurricane season cuts into boating time)--I'll be offering our '92 CD 16 Angler for $9500 shortly, with a '92 Mercury equipped with oil injection, and 476 hours on it, running well. Boat in good condition, equipped with compass, VHF, AM-FM cassette stereo, Ritchie compass, two stainless rod holders roof mounted, and swim step/ladder.
That sound about right? Bruce
 
Bruce - if the boat is in as good a condition as you say, it is a good starting price. It is also a good time of the year to be selling a boat.

Make sure you post pictures, they are a big help when selling.

Okay, she's on the market. Thanks for all your help. I put her on C-brats' Boats for Sale and in the Baltimore Craigslist two days ago, and have already had one couple come over to see her. I'm corresponding with another inquiry as well. Matter of fact, I've referred folks to this Pub and to this thread for as much information as they might want. You all are great. I may have to swim to this year's Chesapeake gathering if all goes well. Best to you, Bruce
 
This got posted on the for sale thread by mistake (my mistake)--
So, by February 22 I had several inquiries, one couple had come to see the boat, and one person had made an offer around $7000 sight unseen. One fella had asked if $7500 would be accepted, then tried again with $8000, but it was hard to tell if he was serious enough to put serious money down if an offer was accepted. All these folks came in response to the Craigslist Baltimore ad about the boat. Then, it is as if the lights went out--no calls, no email inquiries, nada this past week or so. In the meantime, more ads here for similar older boats, at much higher initial prices. Interesting. Clearly the desirability of a newer model four stroke engine is a big part of the issue. I had considered repowering, then selling, but it's hard to see that working either to my advantage or a prospective seller's. Perhaps being very honest about "nicks and dings" was not a good idea, but I'm talking about minor repairs little nicks and chips much smaller than a dime, and not many of them, not gouges and structural cracks. We're talking about a good clean, sound boat. This is so much different a response than when I sold Snowdon, I'm going to guess it has to do with the times. Oh, well--a good deal on a very good boat is waiting for someone. More as events warrant...Bruce
