Permatrim sea trial

Joe, I have not researched this as a viable Permatrim benefit but I do like multipurpose devices, and original and alternative thinking. This sounds like a fine example of both. Any idea if it would work with the Twin 40 Yami's?

This has been mentioned by several persons in the past. The motor must have a tilt switch on the side just below the cowling as many of them do for tilting the motor while standing on the ground along side the boat and trailer.

I've not done it myself, as I have a ladder that folds down on the port side of the transom, and use a regular over the gunnel ladder when swimming in the summer.

Earlier in this thread, cemiii noted that he added 3M non-skid tape to the top of his Permatrim to allow the kids to use the Permatrim as a swim step.

I see no reason either one of your 40's would work any different than a single 75, 90, etc. The tilt mechanism should be strong enough.

Bigger folks might need a handle or two on the transom to pull their weight forward and upright before tilting the engine and Permatrim, etc.

This is not a deluxe elevator ride, but an emergency system only.

On the transom and engine well, cover all screws with exposed threads (meat hooks) with acorn nuts to protect anyone using this device.

Will adding a permatrim on a 25' with a single make for any changes in the boat's behavior at displacement speeds? Steering? MPG? Thanks.

I believe that if you read though the various Permatrim threads, you will find that there's reason to believe that the Permatrim will make for slightly improved steering and tracking at displacements speeds, but not affect the other performance parameters until acceleration and planing speeds are considered.

There also may be some slight tendency to reduce pitching in chop, but it might not be easily noticeable.

My $0.02 guess of the day!

Hopefully a CD-25 owner with a Permatrim will answer based on their actual experiences.

Harvey, on my single intallation there is plenty of room on the transom on the port side of the motor. That's also where the Lab Retriever get's yanked back aboard, over and over and over. It is only a 20" step with a hand from someone in the boat or it works with right hand on the engine top and left securely on the port bow cleat. I also put a strip of the safety tape on the top of the transom. usually the yougen's are wearing water shoes. I had never even thought of it as a hydraulic lift.

I don't know how much room you have on the transom with twins but all you really need is enough transom to get a leg through then you can probably sit on the lazarette and swing your legs over the well.

Thank you for the excellent responses. I think there would be room with the twins, though from riding along in the JC Lately I know there is not as much room in the well or on the transom as with a big single. I guess my concern is that the housing on the 40 is smaller and may be lighter duty than on the bigger engines. Also, and Joe addressed that the hydraulic lift may be potent enough to lift an additional of up to 300 pounds if we are trying to retrieve someone from the water. He said it may be enough to lift a person, but what I am thinking of would be to have some sort of a tie bar system, to go between the 2 permatrims. Dividing the load of 300# that would put about 150 on each, might be possible without damaging the hydraulic lift. Since I will be talking to the mechanics on Tuesday I will find that part out.

certainly this is just a guess, but you may find that in a pinch you could stand on both pt's and with hands on front top of the engine cowls actually step on the transom between the motors. I can't imagine an economically feasible engeneering solution to equally distribute the load.
Personally, I'd feel better putting heavy loads on the transom closer to the sides, than directly in the center.

The 3M Safety Strip tape is available at HD in the paint dept. for about $11 for 15 feet, I think. Good to put a few strips on the trailer too.
