Just got a new 22' Cruiser and besides being very excited I'd like to get a suggestion or two on where to install the radio antennae. Thanks Much!!

I have an 8 footer and installed it roughly even with the cleat and behind the starboard running light. It's mostly in the blind spot there. If you have a 4 footer, I would suggest a roof mount. If you're against punching holes in your new toy, there are nice mounts that attach to your rails.

I've just finished the trauma of installing an anchor windlass so little 1/4" holes are a lot easier to do....
 
Daydream and Anna Leigh both have two four footers, one each for marine VHF and 2 meter ham, which are on fold down brackets mounted near the front of the cabin roof grab rail on each side. One word of advice from experience, get as much separation as possible between the radio antenna and the GPS antenna, when I transmit on high power (either radio) it sometimes sends the GPS in to spasms...

A short whip will mount nicely on the visor and will radiate more power to the horizon than an 8' whip which has such a narrow power band it sends it's signal into the sea or sky.

I have an 8 foot whip mounted on the starboard side. I can easily raise and lower it by leaning out the window.

How will I know when my signal is going into the sea or sky?

( I may need to rip my 8 ft. antenna off the old tub and install some 4 footers.)

Ok Chuck how do I know if I should change from the 8 ft. to two 4 ft. antenna.


ANYONE KNOW ABOUT THIS STUFF --- :? (I'M UP IN THE AIR ON THIS ONE)
 
I remembered a thread from a while ago concerning short whip antennas vs 8 fters. You can find the thread under electronics; the specific thread is titled VHF Radios and Such. Perhaps you can find answers to your questions there.
