Raised Helm Seat

A while back I started a folder on my computer where I saved photos/info on various helm seat improvements. I saw two general trends that raised the helm seat.
1) Install a more "luxurious" helm seat, which typically has a thicker base, hence the helm seat ends up raised from its original height. Variation on that was to put a slider/swivel on the stock helm seat, which also ended up raising it. Many of these show up in a search for "helm seat" and then just reading various threads (and sometimes going to a particular poster's album if they mention something that sounds good). Also searching "Cabela" or "Centric" might bring up some examples as those are brands of seats that some have installed.
2) Make a riser for the stock helm seat. The ones I liked best were in the form of a slim drawer, so gave stowage along with raising the seat. Here is one example on Dreamer (if you go to Dreamer's album, you can see more of it). This raised the seat 3.5" Dreamer is a Tomcat, but the same could apply to any C-Dory.

On Valkyrie, I first raised the helm seat by using 1.5 inch thick oak boards, simply removing the seat and drilling holes in the wood in the appropriate places and then replacing the seats with longer screws.

Also, I had the bottom of the helm seat repadded with denser foam so we don't sink down into the seat as much.

Being a small guy I also wanted to raise the seats in my 19. I used the same approach as Valkyrie except I stood the 2x4s on edge. Works great!

Personally, before building a permanent lift, I would experiment with several heights to find the one that was most functional and comfortable.
