Recent Trip to Shanghai

I just returned from an 8 day trip to Shanghai. I posted two images in my gallery that might interest some members.

The first is a flat bottom boat I saw in a village named Zhujiajiao. Zhujiajiao is outside of Shanghai about 30 miles and is billed as the "Venice" of China. It's not near as large as Venice but it does have a few canals and places to visit. Great food and artwork by extremely skilled local craftsmen. I bought some very nice bottles that are frosted on the inside and then painted on the inside. The artists use something like a pin or pen tip at 90 degrees on the end of a fine paintbrush handle. This is dipped in paint and used to paint extremely intricate drawings on the insides of bottles or other objects.

The second photo is of "Releasing the Fish" bridge (also in Zhujiajiao). This bridge was built a little over 500 years ago as a gift from a buddhist monk to the local villagers. Since buddhists don't like to kill animals and the town is a fishing village, the monk made a request that the local fishermen would release their fish 1 day each month in exchange for the bridge. Today, there's a market selling live fish to tourists to be released from this bridge. I watched a number of Chinese youngsters (8 year olds) releasing fish - some didn't think to open the bag and simply tossed the bag and the fish in at once - most figured out to just open the bag and dump...:smile
